Today, I was going through the latest RBI report on the Payment System Report, and the data on UPI’s role in revolutionizing IPO participation caught my eye.
Since the 2019 launch of the UPI-based “One Time Mandate” for IPO payments, the system has skyrocketed.
The data shows UPI IPO transaction values peaking in sync with total IPO sizes.
Here’s why this matters:
🟢Simplified Process: Investors now block funds via UPI PIN in seconds. If shares are allotted, money moves to escrow; if not, it’s unblocked instantly.
🟢Explosive Growth: With 30 live UPI apps, seven sponsor banks, and 51 customer banks, adoption is booming. The graph’s steep post-2019 climb mirrors India’s IPO accessibility.
🟢Global Benchmark: RBI notes that countries are eyeing UPI’s model — its speed and security are reshaping how economies handle public issues.
Now, retail investors, farmers, students, and homemakers can access IPOs as easily as ordering groceries online. For India, this cements our position as a fintech pioneer.
UPI will keep breaking barriers, and I’m betting on it becoming the default pipeline for every Indian looking to grow their wealth.
