WBNG is the CBS affiliate for the Binghamton Television Market which serves the Southern Tier of New York State and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.
WBNG-TV signed on for the first time on December 1, 1949 as WNBF-TV. In that time, the station was affiliated with all four television networks (CBS, DuMont, NBC and ABC). In 1955 it lost it's affiliation with DuMont due to the network's collapse. In 1957, it lost the NBC affiliation to WICZ-TV and in 1962 it lost the ABC affiliation. To this day, it retains it CBS affiliation.
Triangle Publications ,which owned various broadcasting and newspaper properties, purchased WNBF in 1955. In 1973, Triangle Publications sold WNBF to Gateway Communications and changed it's callsign to WBNG-TV.
Gateway Communications sold WBNG to SJL Broadcasting in 2000.
In 2002, WBNG launched its digital channel on channel 7.
On July 26, 2006, Granite Broadcasting purchased WBNG.
