Mardin Ulu Mosque, which is a symbol of Mardin with its sliced dome and minaret, one of the architectural examples of the Artuqid Period, was built with two minarets according to records. The inscription on the square base of the only minaret of the mosque that exists today gives the construction date as 1176, but the current minaret was built in a new and electric style in 1888/1889. Some Syriac writers say that it was converted from a church. However, according to the research conducted by Ara Altun, it is impossible to make this interpretation by looking at the current data of the structure. The mosque reflects the basic features of the 12th century Artuqid Period architecture. The structure of the mosque is also a model imitated by many structures in the surrounding area. The mosque is open for worship.
