THE SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER MONOLOGUE
Being a social media manager is a constant balancing act.
You're expected to handle platform management, community engagement, graphic design, video editing, ads management, content strategy, and analytics reporting perfectly, yet it's never quite good enough because everyone thinks they can be social media managers.
We're always pushing to be extraordinary, but we never do it right somehow.
Your graphics have to be stunning, but not too flashy. You can't outright say you want more followers; you must frame it as building a community, but you still need those follower counts to rise. You need to be creative, but not too offbeat. And you canāt just say you want engagement; you have to frame it as building community.
You need followers, but you can't explicitly ask for followers because that's too pushy. You have to be authoritative, but you can't come off as harsh. You have to lead conversations, without shutting down others' ideas. You should celebrate your brandās success, but donāt overdo it or youāll seem boastful.
You need to highlight the team but donāt overshadow anyone. Youāre expected to manage crises, including those caused by others, which is absurd, but if you point this out, youāre seen as complaining.
Youāre supposed to keep the content polished for the audience, but not so perfect that it feels unattainable, and not so impressive that it makes others feel insecure because youāre part of a supportive community.
You need to stand out and always be positive. But never forget that algorithms are unpredictable. So find a way to acknowledge that, yet always stay optimistic. You have to never make mistakes, never be rude, never boast, never prioritize your needs, never falter, never fail, never show anxiety, and never break from the brand's voice.
It's overwhelming! Itās contradictory and no one gives you credit or thanks you! And it feels like not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.
Iām just exhausted from seeing myself and every other social media manager twist ourselves into knots to gain approval that we work real jobs and it's not just posting on social media. And if all this is true for a role just representing a brand, then I don't even know.

One thing I am learning is there are so many things you can control in the social media marketing world and there are more things way beyond your control as a social media manager.
I made a list but Iām not sure I touched it all.
Did I miss anything?
Would you add or subtract?

Remember the Barcelona App that I said Instagram was looking to release weeks ago? Well they changed the name to threads.
Iām excited about this because right now Elon is limiting our tweets except we pay for twitter blue and even with that itās still limited.
I think if Instagram rolls it out to everyone and I still get to keep my followers my username and all the communities I belong to, Iād count it as a big win for instagram.
What are your thoughts?
Share with me in the comments.

SOCIAL MEDIA UPDATES WEEKLY ROUND UP
(Incase you missed it)
META UPDATES
šš½Instagram is rolling out the ability to download Reels shared by public accounts to your camera roll. I definitely love this particular update so yaaaay!
š£ļø Instagram is allegedly on the ability to create audio Notes.
š¬Instagram expands Broadcast Channels to ALL Creators. Incase you donāt have it yet, Iām with you. I donāt have it yet also but itās still rolling out so letās be patient
š¤Instagram is allegedly working on the ability to generate a comment with AIā¦ I feel Instagram is doing too much but letās see how it goes
YOUTUBE UPDATES
š„¹ YouTube updates its impersonation policy to combat rising reuse of creators content. I like this update a whole lot!
š YouTube tests new option to create shorts replied to comments on other peopleās channels. Sounds like YouTube is copying other platforms too.
š YouTube launched first stage of thumbnail A/B Testing in YouTube studio. This should rollout to everyone and I feel would be very beneficial to all creations so yaay for this.
TWITTER UPDATES
š¤Twitter Blue subscribers can now use up to 25k characters in their tweets (up from 10k)
Iām thinking of subscribing soon because I love their long tweets feature and the edit feature also.
š¦ Twitter is testing the ability to search your Followers list. This would be a great feature because Iād be looking for a lot of people on my list.
šTwitter is also working on the ability to play Twitter videos in the background of other apps or when your phone is locked. The question is Why?
Twitter May look to stop brands from trend hacking via replies on trending tweets. Elon is looking to combat spammy replies at all cost. Good luck with that E!
LINKEDIN UPDATES
šÆLinkedIn has added THREE notification filters, "All, My Posts, Mentions", to prioritise engagement. Great feature!
šLinkedin launches live test of generative AI posts. I donāt think this would work in my opinion.
TIKTOK UPDATES
šø TikTok has a NEW dual camera mode for live videos. Okaaaaayyyy.
šTikTok has a new feature, where if you hold the screen, itāll fast forward the video by x2 and if you release, itāll go back to normal speed. Errrā¦. Why?
š¤¦š½āāļø TikTok seems to have a feature called Picture-in-Picture that allows you to watch For You Page videos while using other apps. Seems everyone is copying each other in the feature department. Whoās next?
š½TikTok has added a feature called Sub-Only Live, which allows creators to go live with *only* their subscribers.
šš¼TikTok has added interactive add-ons for in-feed ads to encourage engagement, such as pop-ups, stickers and gestures. Oh nice
And thatās it for today. See you next week with another update.
