In a complete and utter shock, it appears the bridge "inspections" were a joke; as 2 year old drone inspection video of the crack is making the rounds. The reason the bridge has not collapsed in that 2 year period is that the broken beam is not primarily responsible for holding the bridge up. Rather the crack section's purpose is to prevent the road bed from developing runaway oscillations (like the Tacoma Narrows bridge). It appears the failure is a result of a bad weld and from previous earthquake retrofitting of the bridge. Of course, currently the bridge is not Earthquake safe. If ARDOT and TDOT are lucky, the minimum repair they will be able to get away with is replacing a whole section of that part of the bridge span.

ALERT! The Memphis I-40 bridge crack is in a section of the bridge designed to prevent harmonic motion from amplifying and destroying the bridge.
