Heyo!
I am a peer educator on disability culture and ableism. I've been living with a chronic autoimmune disorder—Crohn's disease—for over half my life. Crohn's disease is a certain type of inflammation, usually found in the digestive system, that can cause symptoms such as rapid weight loss, stomach pain, fevers and diarrhea. I have Crohn's involvement in my bones, joints and trachea in addition to in my digestive system.
I decided to become a peer educator about disability culture and ableism for the following reasons:
1. DIALOGUE I noticed a lack of dialogue surrounding disability culture. In fact, our society under discusses and disability so much that I didn't even identify as disabled until I came to college.
2. STEREOTYPES When individuals to discuss disability, it is often discussed in blanket terms that avoid nuanced understandings up individual experiences.
