I've been a bit quiet of late - since new year, actually. Aside from being back to full time work (boo!) I've been working on my own original compositions, which I'd really like to finish. As I've said before, I don't really share these on YouTube, but with what I'm working on now, I think I might, just to see if there's any reaction to it. Also, once you publish these things, it's like they finally "Really" exist, even if no-one sees or hears them, they're published!

I came across the below image*, and even though I've never been to America, it triggered some memory in me of just hanging out with friends as a teenager in the early 80s. In the new year, I want to make an original piece of music to go with this image; I'm thinking 808s, tinny electro, think Rock Steady Crew, Ollie & Jerry, plus more mainstream electro pop like Irene Cara, The Crusaders, etc. I'm letting it all brew in my mind...
*It's unclear who took the original photo; it's been credited to both Andy Blair, and Thomas Hoepker. I wish I could give proper credit to whoever captured such an evocative moment in time and history.

Phyllis Nelson -Move Closer. I had my first ever slow dance to this at a school friend's party! To this day, I'll still go misty-eyed whenever I hear it. I'm thinking of removing all the (admittedly, great) 80's production, and leaving it stripped down simply with vocals, piano and strings. We'll see.
You go your way, and I'll go mine, but in the meantime... have a wonderful Christmas, and here's to an amazing 2024.

Level 42 - The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up). Hmmm.... You know what this song reminds me of...?

I'm just about to start working on this tonight. I don't know... for what I have in mind, it's going to be really tricky. This might not ever see the light of day. (That's not a pun, because the flower is Night-Blooming Cereus!) I love this song, it deserves something really special that I don't think I can provide. But I'll have a go. Basically, I love the end section, so I want to extrapolate that, and put it at the start! Like I said, it'll be tricky. Worth a try though, surely... I have already spent over an hour creating the image below. I don't know why I chose that flower; whilst I was thinking about the song and browsing at the same time, I came across this time-lapse video of the below flower blossoming at night, and it just seemed to work for the song:

I often think about what songs I could do "Re-imaginings" of, and it's usually my favourite songs. But then, the majority of them are just perfect the way they are, and I can't think of anything I could do to them that wouldn't ruin listening to them for me. Probably my all time favourite song is "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung; obviously, lots of that is nostalgia, but also, it's a mood. That recording is pure atmosphere and tone. And it's so sparse yet dynamic, I keep thinking, "There must be SOMETHING I could do with that..." but I haven't figured it out yet...

Next up, I'm about to start work on "Manchild" by Neneh Cherry. This'll be inspired by the epic remix of Massive Attack's "Protection" done by Brian Eno - [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P96SR... ] - It might take some time though...

A fan of music and cinema, I also compose and create my own music.
But this YouTube channel is mainly for two things; obscure, hard-to-find music that I'd love more people to know about; Also, sometimes when I'm listening to songs (especially from "my era", the 1980s), I sometimes think of little (sometimes TINY) changes I'd make to the record, and so I use some editing software to make new versions of well known songs, sometimes mashing different versions (12", instrumentals, live recordings etc) together to make something new and unique ("Hybrid23") and it's fun to share them. I also really enjoy making the "artwork" for a lot of these videos, though I wish I had more talent in that regard.
