Sometimes I like to think that star wars and murder drones happened in the same universe. And the droids were earlier designs for the drones. Then when more advanced technology came along they ditched the lightsabers for stuff like the disassembly drone's stun gun things. Eventually the lightsabers are basically forgotten. When they were making the droids they had no idea about A.I. so they couldn't tell why the droids could think and move by themselves and eventually just accepted it. They began to mess around with the A.I. and eventually created better versions of the droids and used them for even more purposes.
