Allmusic.com calls her a subtle improviser. Uh, no. This singer is bold. We didn't see as bold an improviser until Betty Carter came along. It's weird that I've never heard of her before. It would be more accurate to call her a revolutionary improviser than a subtle one. I'd compare her to Jimmy Scott in this era for their unique, throroughly thought-through ways of coming into a song.
