Welcome all new Oobu Joobu subscribers! We’ve noticed some comments with similar questions coming in, so here’s a bit of an OOBU JOOBU FAQ:
Q: What is Oobu Joobu?
A: Oobu is Joobu and Joobu is Oobu. Long reign Oobu Joobu forever and ever!
Q: No really, what is Oobu Joobu?
A: Oobu Joobu was a radio show hosted by Paul McCartney in the summer of 1995 featuring memories, rare songs, recipes, rehearsals, soundchecks, jingles, skits and all manner of silliness. This channel is a fan-run tribute, featuring short video content in a similar vein to the Oobu Joobu radio show.
Q: Are you Paul McCartney/MPL?
A: Not at all.
Q: Where did you get all this stuff?
A: I’m a lifelong Beatles/McCartney collector. The videos on this channel have been adapted from a number of sources: the original Oobu Joobu series, documentaries, TV shows, radio interviews, podcasts, YouTube videos, books, magazines, social media posts and so on. The goal is to use all this source material in a form of visual storytelling to bring Beatles/McCartney fans short-form fab content. If you have a question about the source of a specific piece of footage, comment on the video and I’ll do me best to reply in a timely manner.
Q: That's not really Paul, it's AI.
A: There are many different things the term 'AI' could mean. We do incorporate a bit of restorative AI technology on some of the content, including Topaz Video Enhance to upscale low-resolution video, Adobe's Enhance Speech filter to restore spoken voice, Remini for (judiciously utilized!) photo enhancement, lalal.ai for music stem separation and Izotope RX 8 for noise reduction and general remastering. There are also occasionally bits of footage shown out of context or composite photos to illustrate a point. But we don't use generative AI or deepfakery of any kind.
Q: Why are all the videos in portrait mode instead of landscape?
A: The videos on this channel were originally posted on TikTok, which is formatted for a portrait display. In February 2024, due to TikTok’s newly adversarial relationship with UMG, about half of the videos on the TikTok @oobujoobu channel were muted overnight. This YouTube channel aims to re-upload those videos as-is. For best video playback, try full-screen mode. (We particularly recommend watching the playlist pinned to our YouTube channel on shuffle mode for a random assortment of Oobu Joobu goodness.)
Q: Paul died in 1966 and was replaced by Billy Martin.
A: Have you considered getting a new hobby?
Q: What are your plans now?
A: My only plan is to grow up!
