Matt & I wrote the start of this over Zoom in the pandemic during a time when we both felt bleak and burnt out on having to write digitally like most songwriters at the time. We loved the first part of the verse but kind of got lost in the quest for the right next step. I wrote a placeholder chorus that just felt.. meh. Everything in my life at that point felt pretty meh.
I see now that I wasnāt ready to actually truthfully answer the question I had posed to myself in those first lyrics. āI kidnapped myself, and put her in a plastic hell in the middle. The ransom was high, but no price is high if it works just a little.ā Yikes dude, what we talkin bout here?? I was really good at telling the truth in songs but not to myself yet.
Time went on and we couldnāt shake how much we liked the first 30 seconds, so a few months ago we decided to get back together in person and try to capture the rest of the song, still strung out on the demo magic. By this time I had taken a 180 in my life, left a long term relationship, come out, and was experiencing queer love and magic for the first time. I had a new understanding and recognition of the voice inside of me that was trying to tap on my brain almost as to say āhi hello, this is not your life.ā I finally was able to work with the essence of what I had said to myself in that first session and finish writing the song with the lessons Iād learned from finding peace inside an un fragmented me. Itās been a really special homecoming to discover more truth in my music that reflects the truth in my life now. What a gift.
