Peopleâs Film Collective took off in Kolkata in May 2013 with the idea of working with documentary cinema as a peopleâs medium. The dream was to build a volunteer-led film collective, which would i) grow in an organic relationship with, and ii) help amplify and connect â peopleâs movements, oppressed people and their struggles.
Peopleâs Film Collective organizes an annual 4-5 day-long film festival, called the Kolkata Peopleâs Film Festival (KPFF) in January, and a day-long annual film festival called Frames of Freedom in August. Through the year, we organize monthly film screenings, conversations and mini festivals in/around Kolkata. We travel across Bengal to screen films and hold discussions around them. We organise documentary filmmaking workshops. We run Little Cinema, an initiative to engage with young adults through cinema, storytelling and theatre. We publish the journal 'Protirodher Cinema' on documentary, political cinema and counterculture.
