I want to give an update. When people I like online stop posting for a long period I get a little bit worried that theyā€™ve disappeared, so I donā€™t want to create that in others. This is kind of a blog so Iā€™ve included the gist of it.

TL;DR: Videos are on the back burner right now because my life is really good and Iā€™m taking time to enjoy it. Iā€™ll get back to working on RS more consistently in time.

There have been long gaps between videos before, but that was always due to trouble with putting the next video together, or because it was a massive project. Neither the FM video, or the TWEWY video are like that. I love both scripts so far, and I have tons of fun working with them. But I havenā€™t been focused as much on RS this past year. Since the Klonoa video, I have stopped spending as much time online because my life has become incredible. Iā€™ve reached some significant milestones in the past two years that have changed my outlook in a fundamental way. Iā€™ve never been healthier, my body is stronger than itā€™s ever been, and my diet has shifted completely to home-cooked, wholesome meals. Professionally, Iā€™m thriving in software development, making more money than I ever could have dreamed of. I wake up every morning next to a woman who has supported me and loved me since we were teenagers. I have a sense of peace at every moment, like my body is constantly able to relax. I donā€™t understand why I have any of this shit, I have never deserved it, so I just want to enjoy myself in the moment and spend it with the people I hold so dear.

I consider RS to be one of the coolest things Iā€™ve worked on, itā€™s such a great feeling to get to write and make these videos with my closest friends, and itā€™s so cool to me how much people enjoy them. I think I need to find new motivation for them though. RS was always driven from this place of unrest towards how internet videos were changing because of monetization and the growing internet population. I have a very clear idea of how videos should be. Look up any letā€™s play from 2011 and before (Ex. ā€œLetā€™s play Super Mario 64 before:2011ā€) Youā€™ll find tons of videos from people with terrible microphones, some of them pointing cameras at their TV. Their commentary is all improvised, and itā€™s usually clumsy. They try their best to be informative, but stumble over themselves, or they try to make a joke that doesnā€™t really land. I love these guys, maybe some of them had delusions of getting popular, but for the most part, they did videos for fun. People were just enjoying the novelty of being able to record themselves playing a game, and I think monetization really corrupted things. I was fed up with how it was affecting content in 2015, so by this point, now that recommendation algorithms have matured, I canā€™t stand it at all. I liked when I used to have to look for somebody talking about something I liked, and stumble upon a great channel with 200 subs. Channels are now so formulated and sanitized, all for the purpose of trying to optimize their chances at getting their video seen by one new person. Sure, there are people making simple content like in 2011, but there is always this goal now of eventually monetizing, or growing your channel, it is insanely rare to find somebody creating videos out of pure enjoyment for the act of making something, and I donā€™t think the modern internet is an environment that allows for the same freedom of expression that existed back then.

The internet population has doubled in the past decade, which has completely changed everything about it. The culture on the internet used to be more diverse, but has now completely homogenized. People used to be more open through anonymity, but nowadays worry about their online prestige as if it was a real reputation. This kills the ability to be daring and experimental, instead, everybody is extremely on-edge, and this extends to the videos being made. People canā€™t make an innocent joke without doing some bit afterwards to be preemptively deprecating towards themselves because they donā€™t want to stick their chest out and risk having somebody make fun of them for a genuine attempt at anything. Even channels I watch that used to have more edge and bite to them all seem to be in a competition for who can make the most dry and boring video possible on really fun games.

When working on RS, we always noticed and went against these things, trying to be as anti-growth as possible, especially after the THUG video got some initial attention. On several instances, weā€™ve let Youtube pick the thumbnail instead of creating a custom one. Titles for RS vids are meant to be as uninteresting as possible. We put crude jokes near the beginning of most videos to get people to stop watching who think itā€™s serious. The raunchy and insensitive jokes themselves serve a purpose of discouraging Youtube from promoting the videos as much. I think I used to want to show people the joy of making videos when you detach yourself from caring about internet popularity and monetization, but I now think that even time is a problem. All social media sites have the goal of keeping people on them as long as possible, and I donā€™t want to contribute to that by making extremely long videos. Iā€™m not sure what will happen after we finish the TWEWY review, but if we keep going, Iā€™d like to keep RS videos under 40 minutes or so. Iā€™d want to focus on making things more dense and entertaining, instead of just trying to be comprehensive. I want to make really fun videos that encourage people to actually engage with things. If you talk about something and your enthusiasm rubs off on the audience, thatā€™s great, even if itā€™s just getting them to watch a TV show or play some game. At this point, any time not spent on social media is time well spent.

Iā€™ll be back on the horse again sometime soon, and when I stream in the future, there will always be some updates on the prestream so you guys arenā€™t in the dark. Iā€™m very grateful for how warm and kind the audience of RS is, and I want to repay you all with more great videos in the future. Take things easy!

Editing for Klonoa 2 has started! The video will most likely be done within 2-3 months. Once again, RK-d will be streaming the process of an illustration for the video, with all the other RS members (and Coast) hanging out. The event will be on RK-dā€™s Twitch this Friday at 5:30 EDT, and the archive will be available on the ā€œStreamsā€ playlist afterwards. www.twitch.tv/arcadenonsense

We now have Vol 1 of the background music available for streaming on YT, check the Playlists tab on the channel for a link. For new videos, Iā€™m currently working on some audio stuff for the FM tutorial and recording footage for Klonoa 2. Also wanted to thank everybody who watched the OoT video and especially anybody who took the time to leave feedback, itā€™s always very useful. Enjoy some art by our resident RK-d to celebrate the release.

Editing for Ocarina of Time has been going really well and it looks like things are lining up for the video to be finished by the end of the year. All four of us are going to be on RK-dā€™s stream this Saturday on Twitch at 6PM EST (and possibly our friend Kago too). RK-d will be painting an illustration for the video and weā€™ll all be hanging out. www.twitch.tv/arcadenonsense

The narration for the OoT review was just finished yesterday, and Iā€™ve been trying to edit the audio in parallel to speed up the process a bit. Currently Iā€™m halfway done with the audio editing, and itā€™s looking like this vid is going to be another lengthy one, clocking in at around an hour and a half to two hours.

I canā€™t promise any dates on when it will be released, but I will say that after the audio editing is done in a couple days, all that will be left is the actually video editing which generally doesnā€™t take too long to pull together. The process may be a bit slower though since Iā€™m working full time now and am still getting settled into the position, but Iā€™ll still try my best to get it out at a reasonable time.

Iā€™m also doing a stream in a little bit today, so feel free to drop by and hang out/ask questions. I always appreciate you guys.

I leave you with a drawing of Star Fox eating chicken fajitas by our local RK-d.

I did a stream yesterday of Within a Deep Forest and it was fantastic. I was very excited to let it process and put it in the new ā€œStreamsā€ playlist I just made that allows people to view old streams without them taking up space on the channel page. Unfortunately, I got a claim put on the VOD. ā€œWMG has blocked your videoā€. I played a lot of music on the stream, and many claims were made for ads, but only one managed to get the video flat out blocked. The song ā€œBlitzkrieg Bopā€ by The Ramones, which played on my Tony Hawkā€™s Pro Skater 3 post stream in game. Not very punk if you ask me!

Iā€™m editing the video now for people interested and will be re-upload it to the playlist either tomorrow or the next day depending on how long it takes Youtube to process it.

Also the next Running Shine is being written right now, and when we have more details on the second game we plan to review weā€™ll make an update video revealing them, along with other content we have planned.

It makes us really happy that the Mischief Makers video was received so well, we were trying out some new things with it and I think it payed off. Post Elvis helped a lot with the audio production, so hopefully my voice wonā€™t be coming out of your subwoofers anymore. Tropics and I have a couple games weā€™re thinking about doing next, but we donā€™t want to confirm anything until we have things more solidified and know we can make great scripts with them.

Thanks for all your support and feedback, it's always useful. Hopefully we can reach new heights with the next one. Enjoy this Marina RK-d made to celebrate the videoā€™s release!

Just want to let you all know that the Mischief Makers script and first round of audio recordings are done. Iā€™ll have to re-record some things here and there for smoother delivery but otherwise itā€™s coming along great. Hope youā€™re all doing well!

We were only planning to get to the 1000 sub milestone from the YIIK video, but you guys didnā€™t get the memo and brought it up to over 3000 instead.

We really appreciate all the feedback weā€™ve gotten on the YIIK video and will do our best to make the next one even better! Mischief Makers is the next game and Iā€™m excited to get back to reviewing older games and making the videos positive, fun, and even relaxing if possible. YIIK being a mixed game led to some great bits, but tonally I think the THUG review still best represents the kind of content we want to make. In that Iā€™m really resonating with the game and casually walking through it while giving some relaxed observations. We want to make comfy videos, basically.

Now because I'm over 1000 subs I can now make updates like this also, so you guys donā€™t need to be kept in the dark on whatā€™s happening with the production. I really appreciate all the love the videos get. Tropics and I would still be writing these videos even if we only had 10 subs, just because we have fun making them, but seeing things blow up in this way is really cool. Couldnā€™t thank you all enough.
