TIE OF THE DAY: A Tie to Wear Backstage - B2W Z Harvest 1923
-
The Charleston, love it or hate it, really represented the 20s in a microcosm:
the clash of new morality with old, of religion with secular life, the hedonism, the shocking mixing of racial cultures- all of this is represented in this one tie.
-
Well, not really. But watch the video and see how it does represent at least a piece of all that.

TIE OF THE DAY: A TIE WITH A CAT ON IT
Lenin had cats. Indy, Sparty and Astrid have cats. But neither Lenin's cats, nor our cats have been known to catch live tuna, or prowl on cattle.
Perhaps this is what José Piscador was trying to tell us with this tie. Or maybe, as Indy posits, it was a subtle way to make us think of religion by way of thinking of cats, who do eat fish (but smaller fish than tuna). And when thinking of religion, we could then avoid being like Lenin.
In sum, if you're a cat person this tie can't fail you - it will remind you of what cats crave, and to avoid being a dictator.
Oh, and like many other famous cats, this cat has been on YouTube.

TIE OF THE DAY: A TIE WITH DAFFY DUCK TO JUMP INTO THE FUTURE
This tie has absolutely nothing to do with 192, except that Indy wore it in 1921. What it does have is the ineffable, lovable, and absolutely loathsome Daffy Duck on it. A cartoon character that Indy and Sparty prefer over Donald Duck, which is just human nature when it comes to ducks - or at least it should be.
Letâs face it: while a duck that is supposedly cogent, but runs around with a shirt but no trousers is just not likable - one that is barely cogent, but just goes commando all the way deserves our respect. So, if you are too, like all mankind should be, and Indy and Sparty are: a fan of Daffy Duck - get this tie!
Oh yeah... it's got chillies too, if you just happen to be a fan of the capsicum experience, like (once again) Indy and Sparty both are.

DO YOU WANT TO WORK WITH US?
-
Then keep reading! Because in just a few months our group of talented interns will be leaving us. Weâre going to miss them, but the time has come to let a new batch of recruits on board the TimeGhost Team!
-
Being an intern at TimeGhost is the ideal way for a history buff to spend a gap year or combine with part time studies/work. The internship is online based, runs for 12 months (August 2021-August 2022), and requires that you can work at least 16 hours a week (partly flexible). Education wise we expect a high-school diploma in history as a minimum.
-
You will primarily be working in two departments:
1. Research & Writing. Here you will be getting scripts ready for filming through fact-checking, research assistance, or even writing sections of episodes yourself.
2. Community Management & Social Media. Here you will be interacting with our amazing fans, for example through monitoring YouTube comments, helping with media strategy, and writing posts for our social platforms.
If circumstances allow, you will also get the opportunity to assist during a filming session in Munich where youâll be working with Indy, Spartacus, and the rest of the team in person.
-
We want to make our internship program a truly educational experience, so on top of day-to-day guidance and feedback on your work, core members of the team will regularly hold online seminars. They will cover different aspects of history documentary making and the creative industry in general, from Indy telling you how to keep viewers engaged, to Spartacus giving an in-depth look at the birth of nationalist historiography in the 19th century!
-
Does this sound like something for You?
-
In that case, send an email to internship@timeghost.tv with your CV and tell us a bit about yourself. As an example of your writing, research, and commitment, we also want you to provide a 500-word proposal on a future TimeGhost production. It can be an idea for a new series, sub-series, or a specific episode on either TimeGhost History or World War Two. Include a source list that could be used to begin researching your idea.
-
Weâre looking forward to hearing from you!
The TimeGhost Team

SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS
-
On this day in 1942 an attempt was made to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect of the Holocaust.
-
History shows that sometimes rulers are despotic, evil-doing, or outright mad. When the ones who wield the power can't be dethroned by means of peaceful democracy, how do you end their reign? If the killing of one person might save many others from suffering or death, is there such a thing as 'justifiable murder'? This dilemma has been debated by scholars of ethics and law since antiquity, and it is the reason why today we list:
-
TIMEGHOST TOP 5: Tyrannicides
-
5. Park Chung-hee - South Korean President and oppressive dictator who installed himself through a military coup dâĂ©tat and then changed the constitution to ensure his perpetual rule. On October 26th, 1979, he was shot to death during a dinner in a safehouse by Kim Jae-gyu, the director of the KCIA.
-
4. Hendrik Verwoerd - Far-right white supremacist who was the authoritarian Prime Minister of South Africa, and the architect of Apartheid. On September 6th, 1966, he was stabbed to death by parliamentary messenger Dimitri Tsafendas in the Cape Town House of Assembly.
-
3. Caligula - Roman Emperor who claimed to be a God, allegedly incestuous and sadistic. He executed any threat- including his relatives- and flung the Empire into financial crisis through extravagant spending. On January 22nd, 41 AD, he was stabbed to death by officers of the Praetorian Guard led by Cassius Chaerea.
-
2. Andronikos I Komnenos - Byzantine Emperor who took power by executing a 10 year-old and his mother. Condoned the Massacre of the Latins and executed all the Empireâs prisoners and exiles, including their families. On September 12th, 1185, he was killed by sword after being tortured and mutilated by a mob for three days.
-
1. Rafael âEl Jefeâ Trujillo - Dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic as President and unelected military strongman for 31 years that were one of the bloodiest eras ever in the Americas. On May 30th, 1966, he was ambushed in his car and shot to death by, among others, Antonio Imbert Barrera, Antonio de la Maza, and Juan TomĂĄs DĂaz.

On May 26th, 1897, the gothic horror novel âDraculaâ was released, conjured up by the Irish author Bram Stoker. Thatâs why today is: DRACULA DAY
-
Vampiric beings have populated the folklore of many cultures for thousands of years, but tend to be portrayed as foul, brutal creatures- more like either demons or zombies. So where did Stoker get the inspiration for his somber, aristocratic, bloodsucking Count?
-
The 15th century Wallachian voivode known as Vlad the Impaler is commonly named as the model for Dracula. He is described as a brutal and bloodsheding warrior, with the horrifying habit of impaling his enemies. The son of Vlad Dracul- Vlad the Dragon- he was also called Vlad Dracula, âSon of the Dragonâ. Stokerâs notes show that he came across Vlad Dracula in his research, and that he knew the modern Romanian meaning of the word dracul: devil. Today, however, it is argued that the Impaler didnât influence Stoker beyond his devilish name. But if that is the case, then who did?
-
Well, there is one contender who has caused wild discussion among fans and scholars alike: Elizabeth BĂĄthory, âThe Blood Countessâ.
-
BĂĄthory was a Hungarian countess born in 1560, who was convicted for sadistically torturing and killing hundreds of women. As legend has it the Countess liked to bathe in, and drink, the blood of virgins to stay young and beautiful. âTeam BĂĄthoryâ means that she makes for a more logical and likely mold than Vlad the Impaler, who has no connection to vampiric bloodlust or eternal youth. That Stoker used a book that told the legend of Elizabeth BĂĄthory is documented, but according to the detractors of Team BĂĄthory there is not one single sliver of hard evidence that Stoker took inspiration from, or even read, the section about her.
-
There is also the acclaimed actor Henry Irving, who owned the theatre where Stoker was manager. Just two years earlier, Irving had played Mephistopheles in "Faust" to great success. It is argued that it was with Irving's looks, dramatic presence, and mannerisms in mind Stoker wrote his game changing vampire.
-
A violent ruler, a bloodthirsty countess, or a famous actor- who do you think is the real origin of Dracula?

TIMEGHOST BEHIND THE SCENES: WHEN INDY WAS A TEENAGE SUPERHERO
-
So⊠it was the summer of 1986.
-
I had just finished my first year at Wesleyan University and was 18 years old. I spent that summer in NYC living on the Lower East Side, which was both dangerous and magical way back then. I was a pizza guy. So one night at Save the Robots I meet this guy named Ernesto âSplinterâ Ramirez, right? I had done some ninja training in high school in Texas and he was putting together a ninja squad and we got along soâŠ
-
âŠwell⊠the other three guys in the squad were turtles.
-
As you all know, they were actual real mutant turtles, now being trained as ninjas. They wanted it to be a quartet, though, but couldnât find a 4th actual mutant turtle to ninja train, so I jumped in for the summer, basically as a ninja temp. They had all taken Renaissance artist names so I chose Leonardo- because I wasnât just an âartistâ, I was more of an everyman genius, see?
-
It was three crazy months, and after I left the crew and went back to college they got a proper mutant turtle as the new #4, but I left my mark- NEWS FLASH: it was ME who introduced them to pizza. (I am aware that I should have used first person there. Shut up.)
-
Oh, and PS: MY Leonardo used a baseball bat, not a sword, because Baseball Furies (look them up). The new guy didnât know âThe Warriorsâ and he thought swords were cooler, but NOTHING is cooler than the Baseball Furies.
-
Well, 23 May being World Turtle Day, I thought Iâd bust out the old costume for once- still fits pretty good!
The turtles are all really good guys and deserve all the love they can get. We chat every few months on Facebook, but just today I wish my old buddies in arms and all their ânaturalâ kin peace, love, and understanding. KAWABUNGA!

THE ANIMAL CASUALTIES OF WW2:
-
It can easily be forgotten, but war takes a toll on the whole ecosystem. May 21st is Endangered Species Day, so today weâre looking at the impact WW2 had on other animals than humans.
-
Countless animals lost their lives during WW2. Millions of horses died on the fronts as the war was still largely waged with horse and carriage transports. Pet cats and dogs were euthanized, as people couldn't care for and feed them- 750,000 in Great Britain alone. Farm animals were slaughtered beyond sustainable limits in plunder and scorched earth. Starvation by policy, sieges, and blockades led to people eating animals they otherwise would not.
-
Wild animals died as collateral damage in battle, but we have no reliable numbers for how many. At least one species went extinct: the Wake Island rail, a flightless bird endemic to Wake Island. The rail was already threatened by invasive species like rats and rabbits, and in 1944 the Japanese occupiers, stranded and without supplies, killed the last bird for food.
-
Some animals, though, were saved by the war. Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) for instance, benefited from the naval war halting hunting. The worldâs largest animal, the blue whale, was nearly extinct in the 1930âs. Without the interruption of WW2 it would probably have been gone by the 1950âs.
-
In a rather bizarre turn of events, the Nazis also helped reintroduce the wisent (European bison). Hunted close to extinction in the 19th century, the last wild wisent herd of 600 was slaughtered by the Imperial German Army on the Eastern Front during WW1.
-
In 1923, efforts to reintroduce the species began, using captive wisent, but the program was under-financed. Then, in 1934, as part of his idea to create huge nature reserves for hunting in the planned German Eastern Lands, Goering took a personal interest and put the program in overdrive. Breeding was successful, but WW2 began and the wisent were left in captivity.
-
As luck would have it though, the herds survived the war. In 1945 zoologists revived the program, and already in the 1950âs the first animals were set free. Today there is once again wild wisent in parts of Europe.

TIMEGHOST HIGHLIGHT:
-
"Society allows the diseased, the racially negligent, the thriftless, the careless, the feeble-minded, the very lowest and worst members of the community, to produce innumerable tens of thousands of stunted, warped, and inferior infants. If they live, a large proportion of these are doomed from their very physical inheritance to be at the best but partly self-supporting, and thus to drain the resources of those classes above them which have a sense of responsibilityâŠif the good in our race is not to be swamped and destroyed by the debased as the fine tree by the parasite, this prolific depravity must be curbed.â
-
These aren't the words of Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, or Lord Voldemort, but of famed birth control activist and sexual crusader, Marie Stopes. For their time, however, they're not as controversial as you might think.
-
Eugenics became a mainstream preoccupation â perhaps even part of the zeitgeist â of intellectual circles in the 1920âs, and the Great War was the catalyzer. What shocked many people about it was not just the quantity of lives lost, but also the quality. The finest men - the bravest, the fittest, the âmost superior racial stockâ â had been slaughtered on the battlefields, apparently leaving behind the inferior, free to carry on their reckless breeding.
-
This outlook was shared across the ideological spectrum, from utopian socialists like H.G. Wells to rational economists like John Maynard Keynes to young politicians like Neville Chamberlain. They had different ideas about what the future should look like, but all believed that biological improvement of the race was the only way to secure it.
-
Marie Stopes saw birth control as the path to this future. As she wrote in 1921: "the campaign for Birth Control is...practically identical in ideal, with the final aims of EugenicsâŠonly by intelligent mastery of the procreative powers can the great mass of humanity be awakened to the great responsibility of parenthood.â
-
It sounds unbelievable and surreal, doesnât it?
