I'm a writer and journalist, cooking my way through 'Cocina Criolla,' a classic Puerto Rican cookbook that many consider to be 'Joy of Cooking' of Puerto Rico. What began as a sentimental project, homage to my grandmother who was an amazing home cook and recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, opened my eyes to the possibilities and shortcomings of a cuisine that has been underexplored.
Through multimedia and writing I'm exploring Puerto Rican culture and and history through food. I'm breaking from conventional understandings of authentic Puerto Rican food, and offering alternative ways of approaching the island’s cuisine.
