During Winter Solstice, the souls who were ready to continue on with their soul journeys would gather at a place in the north where there are a lot of pine trees. And there, they wait for a star woman, who would then take them to a place in the stars where the next part of their soul journeys would continue. They were not going to a heaven, as we do not have that kind of concept in our Lakota Star Knowledge beliefs. What our ancestors believed was a totally different concept that had nothing to do with a god, devil, heaven or hell. It was, and is, more than that. Before these spirits left, Lakota Ancestors would leave food outside for them. The souls take the spiritual essence "Tun" from the food. After that, any person or animal could have the food. This is a tradition that has been lost. During the early days of the reservations, christian influenced Lakota people used to do this on xmas eve. Today, hardly anyone does this anymore. Ho hecetuwelo, Mitakuyepi, Tekicihilapo! ( Everyone, Love One Another )
