Rao R Sharath who describes himself, quite simply as a 'student of music', is one of the pre-eminent vocalists in the rigorous Carnatic tradition of India's classical music.
Over the past 17 years teaching has been the core of Sharath's engagement. Stressing with rigor the exacitudes of Carnatic music's traditional norms, he encourages his students, drawn from various parts of the world, to experience the music's creativity as an art form.
His training has placed him in the highest reaches of the time-honoured system. He has at the same time, come to occupy a markedly district place in the Carnatic Universe.
