For my high school graduation, my parents gifted me my Tama solid maple snare. It's my main snare I use every time I play live. My son, Taylor Kinnear, mentioned he wanted something meaningful like that for his graduation gift. Something sentimental that would last a lifetime. My wife, Jessica Kinnear Garthly, and I decided to surprise him with a beautiful hand crafted snare drum made by Ethan from Philadelphia Drum Company. The wood was scrap mahogany left over from my friend, Ron Clark, house construction. It sat outside aging for 5 years on my wood pile waiting for a moment like this. I asked Ethan if he could mill it down and use it to make a snare. He loved the idea and was all in. After work began, he said there was enough wood for two drums. So, for a Father's Day gift, Jess gave me the other drum. I wanted something special for the badge, so I took our family crest and modified it with the Philly Drum Co logo, our names, and I called it the Clark Collection to remember where the wood came from. After 4 months, reveal day came. Ethan gave us a factory tour and showed us all the different phases of making a stave drum. What an amazing facility!! We checked out the different types of drums available and got to play them. Then Ethan brought out the snares for the surprise and Taylor was floored. He had no idea. These drums are gorgeous!!! Uniquely individual twin siblings. The craftsmanship is second to none!! They sound sooooo good. Warm and focused. Responsive and powerful. I can't thank Ethan enough for all the hard work, back and forth texts, phone calls, designs and redesigns. He was extremely patient and made my vision into reality. The best part, is now my son has his forever snare. I can't wait to get this thing on the next gig and put it through it's pace's.
