The groundwork for the Swargate-Katraj underground Metro stretch is facing delays due to revisions in the detailed project report (DPR) after the addition of two new stations at Balaji Nagar and another beyond Padmavati. Initially, the 5.4km Metro route was planned with three stations-Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj-and was approved by the Centre in August 2024. However, following demands from elected representatives and residents, Maha Metro conducted surveys and confirmed the feasibility of adding the new stations without changing the router's alignment. This change has led to an increase in the project cost by Rs 683 crore, bringing the total estimated cost to Rs 3,654 crore. The revised plan now requires fresh sanctions from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), state, and Central governments, further pushing back the project timeline.
Maha Metro had initially planned to begin groundwork by April 2025, with contractor appointments expected by March. However, with the revised DPR awaiting approvals, officials remain uncertain about when the actual work will start. While Maha Metro is expediting the approval process, commuters and local residents have expressed frustration over prolonged delays, urging authorities to begin work and secure sanctions in phases.
Some citizens have criticized the late recommendations from elected representatives, stating that such changes should have been considered before finalizing the original DPR to avoid further delays.
