The Origin of Metabolic Disease:
When I was diagnosed with gout and prediabetes, I was shocked to learn that the underlying causes of these diseases were still unclear. As I delved into research, I discovered that much of the medical science was based on a broad, macroscopic perspective—like observing the outside of a forest to understand its complex inner workings. Combined with recommendations for a Mediterranean diet, exercise, and medications that merely slowed disease progression, I felt disoriented and unsatisfied.
As a Ph.D. biochemist, I understood that metabolic diseases should be manageable through diet. I turned to peer-reviewed literature dating back to the 1800s and found ample evidence that low-carb lifestyles can reverse obesity and diabetes. Through seven years of coaching, I’ve also seen that gout can be put into remission with similar approaches.
From the start, I was searching for a biochemical pathway whose chronic activation could underpin most metabolic diseases. Studying gout led me to fructose-uric acid biochemistry, revealing that fructose is central to explaining many conditions. This pathway, activated by both glucose and fructose, produces effects linked to metabolic diseases.
My goal with this project is to help people overcome metabolic diseases by addressing chronically overactivated pathways due to modern diets—specifically sugar, processed foods, and seed oils. While insulin resistance is often blamed, we overlook the biochemical drivers behind it. Much of the critical research on metabolism ended in the 1990s, but scientists like Krebs and Veech showed that our pathways are far more dynamic than assumed, with coenzyme couples and redox states controlling their flow (including transcription factors, SIRTS, and hormones).
Veech pointed out that a generation often passes before scientific advances reach medicine, and funding for metabolism research has nearly vanished. Yet understanding metabolic disease depends on linking classic pathways and understanding how their overactivation leads to conditions like hyperinsulinemia, inflammation, and insulin resistance.
My mission is to revive and advocate for this essential research, drawing on both Veech’s insights and my own practical experience to help drive the cultural shift needed to address the metabolic diseases of our time.
