This afternoon’s Amtrak California Zephyr 6 did a rare grade crossing sequence and also a shave and a haircut as it passed through Downers Grove, IL. We turn to you the viewers on how do you rate this horn. On a scale of 1-5 (1 poor; 5 excellent).

Signs that peak season is moving towards a close and Christmas is almost here. Engines running light and coal being hauled in for those that were naughty.
A couple more compilations will be released covering the weekend of 12/21 - 12/22 and possibly a special 12/23/24 compilation if the action is good enough to warrant a production. Then a best of 2024 will be released sometime around 12/31.

Here’s something you don’t see every day. A southern transcon re-route onto the CB&Q. We had seen this train on the Galesburg, IL camera around 10:15am on Friday, December 20, 2024. It passed through Downers Grove, IL at 3:30pm. With some help from another railfan on location in Downers along with some research, this was the Q-SBDCHI San Bernardino, CA to Corwith, IL guaranteed service intermodal.
Power on this particular train was BNSF7215, BNSF5467, NS4570, NS1803.

We join our colleagues at Union Pacific in remembering the engineer and conductor that tragically lost their lives in a train vs semi truck collision in Pecos, TX on December 18, 2024. This was an accident that should have been prevented.
The call to action which also serves as a PSA is if you see something with a grade crossing that doesn’t look right (vehicle stuck on the tracks, possible trespassers on or near the tracks, lights and/or gates malfunctioning), there is a small blue rectangular sign at the grade crossing in which the public can call which will connect the caller directly to the railroad. The railroad can take appropriate action which includes radioing the train crew to slow or stop an approaching train if needed. There is also a unique ID number on the sign that identifies the grade crossing in question.
In the railroad industry (or any industry), the goal is to return home each day to your families free of injury and harm. Two train crew employees lost their lives as they were doing their jobs helping to move America’s economy. Right before the holidays, the pain and trauma hits a lot more.
Let us remember those that lost their lives, and also in the public view, if you see something, say something.

With five days until Christmas and as the morning commuter rush winds down, freight traffic is queuing up to move goods to where they need to be. The rush to Christmas goes up another couple of degrees.

On this cold Friday evening, this is our first look at the Metra holiday train running on the BNSF in regular service. Our photographer played around with the camera settings and managed to get some decent shots. Although not perfect we plan to incorporate some of the raw footage into new shorts and full length video footage.
