discoverela is a website which celebrates the diversity and beauty of the Hispanic community in Los Angeles. In 2009 we produced a small film "Migration: The Right to be Free" with the guidance of a priest in Boyle Heights. We were fortunate to win the 2009 Jesuit Conference of the Society of Jesus in the United States and The Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform and Justice for Immigrants national video competition.
In 2013 we will increase the number of videos, particularly those subjects which are related to the healthcare needs of this community. The objective is to create videos which will promote healthcare access. A greater emphasis will be on healthcare education and prevention. It is a common observation that many Hispanics do not access the healthcare system in an efficient way which often results in late-stage chronic conditions. The videos will incorporate culturally-sensitive thought and reasoning in both Spanish and English.
