The gaur, also known as the Indian bison, stands as the largest extant bovine, native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia.
Mature males can reach shoulder heights of up to 220 cm (7 ft 3 in) and weigh as much as 1,500 kg (3,300 lb), making them formidable inhabitants of their ecosystems.
Despite their impressive stature, gaurs have been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1986, with global populations estimated at a maximum of 21,000 mature individuals as of 2016, predominantly residing in India.
