remember some time ago when i asked you to participate in a kpop study for someone who approached me? here are the results they sent me!
Our online-experiment tested if positive and negative representations of Kpop fans have an influence on fans and non-fans. To test this we wrote two versions of a newspaper article, one which presented fans in a positive way and one which presented them in a rather bad way. People who took part in the experiment randomly got one of the two versions. The hypotheses we tested were:
H1: Negative news cause stereotypical ideas of fans in non-fans.
H2: Positive news about fans make non-fans want to engage more with Kpop.
H3: Positive news about them cause fans to identify more as Kpop fans.
H4: Negative news about them result in an increase of fans pointing out the differences among fans.
Only the third hypothesis proved to be true. Over all 756 interviews were analysed. Among those who took part in the study, 688 people were Kpop fans and 68 were non-fans.
We'd like to point out that our results may not apply to other countries. Having read all of your comments we'd also like to add that we're very sorry if people felt hurt by our experiment. Since it was our goal to find out what positive AND negative representation of Kpop fans can cause we had to purposely use stereotypical ideas of fans for the latter. We do NOT share these views however and we made sure to clarify that the used article was made up at the end of the survey. So with that being said: Thank you very much to everyone who participated!!
