Project Vigil is a personal remembrance project dedicated to the memory of American soldiers buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. It was started by my 11 year old son, who wanted to put a face and a story to the names on the crosses. Together we selected three paratroopers from the 3rd Bn, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, and we wrote small biographies on each man. During the week of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, my son stood vigil at their graves, and in the cold, rain, and burning June sun, he taught hundreds of visitors about them. Our dream is that someday the cemetery will be filled with people holding signs featuring photos of the soldiers buried there, and they too will tell their stories.
