Move forward to today, and similar tactics are going on—only now, they are being amplified by platforms like YouTube, Tiktok, and X. The recent revelations about Russian state media funding American right-wing YouTubers to spread pro-Russian, anti-Ukrainian narratives highlight how these strategies have adapted.
What once involved shortwave radio and print media now revolves around online influencers and monetized content. The Justice Department's indictment of Russian media operatives funding U.S. social media voices underscores the sophisticated ways in which foreign adversaries continue to infiltrate American discourse. Despite the indictment, stopping this manipulation is harder than ever, given the nature of digital platforms and free speech protections.
This long-standing practice of spreading disinformation, while modernized, is not new—and it raises important questions about how we protect our information spaces in a world where money and algorithms can amplify any message, no matter where it originates.
