This is a podcast that I did with a lovely guy called Benjamin Duteil, a Masters student who had started a series of podcasts called NeuroView. Tragically, Benjamin died in September 2024 - a great loss to us all. In it, I describe, in French, the history of my interest in the links between the Brain and AI. I really like this sort of informal discussion which is a great way to get to know what people really think.

Ah. This is fun. It's the first video on Youtube with me in it, dating from 2011, before I had gone grey! It was made to mark the fact that I had just got a big European Grant - My ERC Advanced Grant "M4 : Memory mechanisms in Man and Machine". I talk about my work on fast processing of images and, in particular, works of art, which explains the initial sequence with loads of famous paintings. The producer also made loads of references to my love of the Beatles, and the fact that one of my favourite films is Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I talk about the fact that watching the film when it came out with my Dad at the age of 12, marked me for life.

Here's another TEDx talk that was presented on the 9th April 2018. I managed to pack my two passions into a single 15 minute presentation. First , I talk about my work on ultrafast vision, how this led (perhaps indirectly) to the Deep Learning Revolution in 2012, and how brain inspired AI could replace many paid jobs. Second, I talk about the need to find ways to survive this AI revolution by introducing a Universal Basic Income. I suggest three ways to finance UBI that still make sense today. Again, it's in French - sorry apologies to people who can't follow. However, my talk on AI, Neural Technology & Social Transformation, that I posted on this channel in 2017 is pretty close, and is also quite short - just 17 minutes.

This is a TEDx talk that I gave in Toulouse 10 years ago that deserves a mention on my personal YouTube channel. Unfortunately, it's in French for non-French speakers. But it's nice to see that over 15000 people have watched it. I made the radical suggestion that you could get rid of just about every existing tax and replace them all with a single global tax on all Financial Transactions. I just watched it again, and I can honestly say that everything I said then makes perfect sense to me today. I gave 11 reasons why it would be a smart move. And 6 critiques, none of which hold up. Frankly, it would be a challenge to pack more revolutionary ideas into a 15-minute presentation.

My estimates of the volume of Financial Transactions at the time were hopelessly underestimated even then. And since then, the volumes have continued to skyrocket. So, the potential of such a tax today could be incredible. You could pay for a Global Universal Basic Income of $100 a month for everyone on the planet with an FTT of less than 0.05%. Even in 2021, the total volume was around $16 quadrillion. 0.05% of that would provide the $8 trillion a year you would need. Would you object to having a 0.05% surcharge on all your credit card payments and bank transfers? No? Well, let's do it!

Here's another video that you might find interesting that is already on YouTube. It's a keynote lecture that I gave for the Société des Neurosciences in Bordeaux. It was annual Alfred Fessard lecture.

I've just discovered that my YouTube channel @SimonJonathanThorpe is not only a place where you can find around 40 videos that I have uploaded to YouTube since over the past 12 years - the first on the 13th March 2012 - I can also post things!

So, here's my first post. It is to thank the 413 people who have subscribed to the channel. Please feel free to post comments on my videos. With a bit of luck, I will get a message that will let me know, and I will do my best to reply. If that doesn't work, feel free to email me directly at simon.thorpe@cnrs.fr

It's also nice to know that the channel has been watched over 115,000 times, with over 1600 in just the last month. I do think that there are some pretty original propositions hidden away here that would merit further debate.
