Let's go back to 1993! This is the second mix I did for the Yaman series, way back when, in early 1993. The music was changing at this time, what became jungle techno was evolving out of what we called hardcore ππ₯

All styles and influences were being used and appreciated to create new sounds and interpretations. It certainly was an exciting time. Personally, I have amazing memories from these very early days of underground music that I will never forget.

I've always approached making music from a place of wanting tracks to represent me and my influences. With Sugarhill, I've taken the 70s sounds that I appreciate and reinterpreted them by incorporating a downbeat intro, then dropping into a funky uplifting roller.

Let's go back to 1992 for this, the first mix of three I did for the Yaman series. I remember a guy called Silky called me up asking if I'd like to do some mixes for him. He compiled the series and then used to sell them, mainly at Camden Market, and he took them to some record shops around London too. I've now learned that they found their way all over the country, on sale as far north as Scotland. ππ₯

This new mix on Apple Music includes the tracks I remember playing in 1994, many of which have gone on to become classics in the genre. Artists include Photek, Doc Scott, Higher Sense, Essence of Aura and DJ Crystl. This was without doubt a magical time, the music had made significant progress and some of the tracks from this year are remembered as some of the best to be produced, and, are still played today. π₯π

In 1994 things were really starting to hot up in the drum and bass scene. I vividly remember playing Dreamscape in Milton Keynes in July, one of my favourite events at that time. Ran by the late great Murray Beetson and his team, Dreamscape was a fantastic rave with excellent production that produced an amazing atmosphere. There were a few rave organisations of this era that really stood out setting the standards and, Dreamscape was certainly one of them. ππ
I recall walking in and hearing all the whistles and horns blasting off and feeling the energy from the crowd. The vibe at that rave was totally electric, rave culture was in full swing and going from strength to strength, really embracing the new sounds of drum and bass. I finished my set that night with my new track at the time, "Piano Tune", the reaction from the crowd totally blew me away, the rest, as they say, is history. πβ€οΈ
Definitely some amazing memories, and what a time to be alive!

It's just over 30 years since I played this set and I can remember it like it was yesterday. I played Tiffany's many times over the years, it was a great venue and always packed out with a friendly atmosphere, with a great team headed up by the ever-friendly Aleccos. Some great memories that I will hold onto forever. 30 years has gone so quickly, it's great to hear all these tracks again!
