Something different on the channel today - a little musical tribute to David Lynch, who passed away on the 15th January, 2025. One of the finest directors of his generation, Lynch had an incredibly unique cinematic eye, and an intense fascination with capturing human behaviour on film. Many of his works highlighted the shiny veneer of everyday American life, breaking that absurd surface to reveal a dark and corrupt underbelly driven by sex and violence. Like all truly great artists, he tried give us insight into the contradictory nature of being human (the light, and the dark). Just to give one example of the magic this man brought to film; there is a slow zoom into a close-up of Anthony Hopkins' face in "The Elephant Man", which freezes as he drops a tear at witnessing John Merrick's disfigurement for the first time. So simple yet effective, it's a tear for humanity and one of the finest shots in cinema. The creative world is a worse place without David Lynch in it; that said, he's left behind a body of work that will continue to resonate with audiences for generations (RIP). There is a 10 minute worldwide group meditation today - very soon in fact - at 12:00 PM PST | 8:00 PM, to honour what would have been David Lynch's 79th birthday. Just one track on the channel tonight - a re-up of the timeless classic "Let It All Hang Out", from A.D.O.R. (RIP).
When you hear some artists have passed it really hits hard. I always got positive vibes from A.D.O.R.'s music, and that is what Hip-Hop is all about at its essence. Thoughts go out to his friends and family.
"Let It All Hang Out" will always have a place in discussions of Hip-Hop's finest records. The 1994 album it featured on, "The Concrete", is also one of the most slept-on Hip-Hop albums of the '90s (with production from Clark Kent (RIP), Diamond, Ski, K-Def, and a bunch of other elite Hip-Hop producers).

A fine pair of Bristol's on the channel tonight. Bit biased, but for me the city's always had one of the strongest Hip-Hop scenes in the UK. The tracks uploaded tonight are from the '99-2000 era. If you want a bit more information on Bristol from around this time, here's a link to a documentary charting some of the culture in the city from its origins:

And here's an hour long live session from the Backyard era in 2000:

We've got an extended player on the channel today. "The 36th Chamber of Noyze" is a selection of live snippets and routines from The Roots, Rahzel, and friends, released on a WL in 1998. The audio quality varies throughout the record, but it's an interesting snapshot of where The Roots were then; and a nice reminder of the kind of incredible, culturally-enriched, sets they were putting together in the mid-90s. Some stellar work from Rahzel on there too - RIP Malik B.
