WHO Declares Mpox a Public Health Emergency as Newer Strain Spreads in Africa
More than 14,000 mpox cases have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this year, according to a reliable source.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
βToday, the Emergency Committee met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,β stated WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a media briefing on Wednesday.
In the United States, 1,634 mpox cases have been reported this year, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This figure is more than double the number of cases reported at the same time last year but significantly lower than the numbers seen during the U.S. mpox outbreak in 2022, CDC data shows.
PHEICs were most recently declared for the COVID-19 pandemic and the previous mpox outbreak of 2022.
Although mpox is endemic to parts of Central and Western Africa, cases have been rising dramatically in the DRC. This year, there have been over 14,000 mpox cases and 524 deaths reported in the DRC, according to the WHO.
There are two types of mpox: clade I and clade II. Clade I has caused small, localized outbreaks in the DRC for years. However, researchers have identified a clade I variant, known as clade Ib, which seems to spread mainly through sexual contact and appears to be responsible for the current outbreak in the DRC.

A LETTER FROM HON. OKUMU RONALD REGAN
To my elder brother from Moyo.
I convey to you my honor, my sincere gratitute to communicate to you with utmost humility of conscience.
Are you in any case aware whether police or the central government have taken action on the many killers of Apaa to date? Madi and Acholi have been one since the last time time of historical war before nation and state formation in Uganda.
As I discussed with you, there seems to be a strong hand interested in that land from the government for settlement of their people which started with ranching restructuring in western Uganda that David Pulkol headed, land in kayunga that I investigated when I was in IGG, to Trans-migration of Balalo in Teso, lango, west Nile, and Acholi sounding like revival of the chwezi empire! At least the North was not part of the chwezi leadership!
I find it hard to believe! We should clearly separate east Madi game reserve from the small Apaa village! But what contradicts all that, is that most people don't know that it's the Madi (Bari) from Sudan who are at it, either claiming part of Moyo or penetrating deep into Apaa claiming to be part of Ajumani because their son is there! I find it very embarrassing that to this age, we have been persuaded that there is a conflict between Acholi and Madi, and our leaders have unfortunately decided to depict that too! I am convinced the indigenous Madi of Uganda has no problem with Acholi and has lived with intermarriage between them to the extent that Acholi called those Acholi in Atiak and part of Pabbo Madi, while the Madi of Moyo where you come from, called the Ajumani people not pure Madi but Acholi.
This game started when Moses Ali was minister for tourism, and he brought one South African Brush an investor to have a hunting ground there. He then proceeded through to ask Gulu district local government then to pass a resolution to gazate that area. He went to Ajumani and did the same because, without Apaa, that alleged area is about 90% in Ajumani. But Gulu local government refused, and Ajumani endorsed. So, parliament passed a resolution based on the Ajumami District Council resolution with the name of East Madi Game reserve without any scaled map attached.
Later Police, Army, and Wildlife went to evict the people of Apaa together with NFA. Afterward, when "deportation" by the central government backed by all the armed forces failed, Ajumani claimed that was their land, and Acholi must leave. Surely, the claimant of Apaa can not be two bodies.
Even so, the government has a clear policy of degazating and relocating people, not by the force of arms! Even there is a parliamentary resolution of a select committee of parliament with recommendations, but the government has chosen to ignore it in a democray by the legislative arm of government! The government of M7 has clearly shown that Acholi in Apaa are not in the territory of Uganda sovereign state! Really, why the killings, burning of homesteads, and hunting of Acholi like that and government takes no actions! Even the president, by putting his own judicial commission of inquiry, he pronounces himself on the matter before the commission has begun its work! Is that good governance by NRM leadership, according to him, with no separation of power?
This question is simple, Apaa can be geo-located from the colonial scaled map of Acholi and Madi districts. The government can also use their administrative structures of local government, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, Electoral commission where they can identify graduated tax payers and local government structure, I dentify which district the school and health center belongs, and the Electoral voting area of Apaa not East Madi game reserve. I have always told my Acholi comrades to adhere to this outlook to resolve Apaa questions that have emerged because of the war, and some people erroneously think Acholi are defeated and they can walk on them. It was Kony, not Acholi, who was defeated, while the bulk of those who fought Kony militarily were 60% Acholi in combat, including our homequards.
My worry is that while NRM and Museveni will go, Acholi and Madi are permanent neighbors who have intermarriage with close cultural values. The modern world all over, social and political evolution has proven that no leader can nolonger create a dynasty except for the European in North America, and Britain in Australia and New Zealand! Even early attempts in South Africa and Zimbabwe failed!
It's therefore up to people like you and me to use our influence and prevent future conflict between Madi and Acholi. Amin used Bari ( Madi) of Sudan against Acholi, and people could not differentiate. But me and you know all these, that Amin used Anyanya from Sudan for his dirty work. Let's not wait for the radical democratic approach of alliances of the oppressed in this nation to handle the situation! I pray that you think deep over this and use your good office to convey reality to the other side who have pretended to Absecond their governance primary responsibilities based on the conviction of arrivalism!
Our greatest problem and threats over land in Northern Uganda is not over Apaa really, but the Balalu who have opted to migrate in the 21st century backed by the state power of gun, money, and administration of state structures! It's, however, temporary but may earn them disastrous consequences, not in a far-off future.
I convey to you my utmost sincere gratitude for the honor by which you have always spared a moment to listen to me.
