Anestis Aivazidis was born in 1926 in Colkhiko, a town situated 28km from Thessaloniki in Greece. His ancestors were from the village Argali in Trabzon (Gr: Τραπεζούντα).

He began playing the Pontic lyra (aka Kemence) at the age of 10 under the guidance of his brother and father. He was an excellent musician with a charismatic voice and also a role model and inspiration for younger musicians. He died on the 19th of September 2016.

Yiannis Charalambidis was born in 1901 in the village Takhtagra in the Russian-controlled Kars region, today part of Turkey. His father had moved to Kars from Pontus in 1887. The family abandoned Takhtagra in 1918 when the Russians ceded Kars to the Ottoman Empire. They subsequently settled in the Veria region of northern Greece.

In 1930, musicologist Melpo Merlier (née Logotheti) embarked on a project to record music from people native to Pontus who had arrived in Greece from the former Ottoman Empire during the 1920's. Charalampidis was chosen to perform a number of traditional songs from the region of Kars. Merlie recorded him singing and playing kemenche at the Alumbra Theatre in Athens in 1930.

The recordings were released in Turkey under the title Pontus Şarkıları: 1930 Ses Kayıtları by Kalan Muzik and in Greece under the title Τα Τραγούδια του Πόντου.

Savelis Yiakoustidis (Gr: Σαββέλης Γιακουστίδης) was a Pontic lyra player and singer of Pontic music. He was born in Imera in 1880 and died in Greece in 1934. Imera, today Olucak Köyü, is located approximately 15 km north-east of Gümüşhane (Gr: Argyroupoli) and 80 km south of Trabzon.

Yiakoustidis differed from other musicians by his eccentricity and impressive performances but also by his stamina. He was renowned for playing the lyra standing for hours on end while people danced around him in a circle. He was also an excellent lyricist and made his own instruments.

This is the only rosin i can find that's marketed as being ideal for a Pontic Lyra. It's made in Greece from Pine trees. I would have thought a rosin is matched to the bow hair type rather than an instrument type. What type of rosin do you use? I use a basic Pirastro.
