10 YEARS AGO today I boarded a 1-way flight to Thailand✈️
Everything between leaving SFO and reaching my destination in Bangkok became a whirlwind of unexpected misadventures (just like everything for the following decade)
Political protestors had blockaded Suvarnabhumi (BKK) airport in Bangkok while I was in the air, so halfway to my destination, upon reaching my layover in Beijing, China, I was told they were going to turn me around and send me back to California.
I told the woman at immigration "No" — I wasn't just visiting. I was MOVING to Thailand, and I wasn't going to let anything stop me from reaching my destination.
I remember pleading and negotiating with several Chinese officers for at least 3 hours in total. At least at the time, nobody was supposed to stay in the People's Republic without pre-applying for a visa BEFORE arrival.
Finally they granted me a 24-hour pass so I could stay ONE night in Beijing, while I sought an onward ticket to a new destination…
The stamp took up a WHOLE page of my passport! For just one night! 😂 (pages are precious when you plan on traveling long-term)
NOBODY in the city could speak more than 3 words of broken English. And of course, my Mandarin was rusty…
I shared a room with a fellow passenger, and I ate only some cracker sandwiches that night since I couldn't read a word on the late-night room service menu.
But NOW, looking back ten years later, I'm glad I stuck with it, persevered through challenges and adversity. My round-the-world misadventures transformed me for the better, exposed me to all kinds of people and perspectives across 4 continents, and now I've somehow been blessed with an amazing, loyal wife and incredible son.
It's NEVER been easy. But it's been AMAZING.
I'm SO thankful for the last 10 years.
Now we've embarked upon our international FAMILY travels once more! YET AGAIN we sold most of our possessions, just like I did back in 2008, and I've brought my wife and son along back to Asia to wander the globe further!
We've finally found a suitable home here in the Philippines, and we're getting serious this time about doubling down on my wife's home country finally.
It seemed near impossible a year ago…
