- Curtain Raiser - 2

During the Varaha Avataram, the rakshashan Hiranyakshan hid Earth under the deluge waters. Lord Brahma was unable to locate Earth to continue with his job of creation. He then prayed to Lord Vishnu to help him find Earth. Lord Vishnu appeared as a small boar from the nostril of Lord Brahma. As soon as Lord Vishnu in the form of a boar jumped out of the nostril of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu grew in size and assumed a very large form. This is the Varaha incarnation.

Why did Lord Varaha appear from the nostril of Lord Brahma?
Each of the five elements is associated with one of the five sensory perceptions. Fire is associated with shapes, sky with sound, water with taste, air with touch and Earth with smell. Smell is perceived with the help of nose; therefore Lord Varaha appeared from the nostril of Lord Brahma as the purpose of His incarnation was to help find Earth.

Why did He assume the form of a Boar?
Of all the animals the boar has a good sense of smell; not only does the boar have a good sense of smell but it also likes the Earth. Hence Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of a boar.

After Lord Varaha destroyed the asura Hiranyakshan and rescued Earth from the deluge waters, Bhumi Devi was very pleased with Lord Varaha as He had rescued the object for which she is the deity. Thus she appeared on top of the Earth and she was supported by Lord Varaha on His divine shoulders.

Goddess Bhumi Devi was very happy that Lord Varaha rescued Earth but she also requested Him to save all the creatures that would be created on Earth. She felt worried that the creatures influenced by their past karmas would take birth and experience the “tapa trayam”.
The three types of tapa trayam are
1. Adhyadhmikam: Sufferings experienced by us because of our association with people, work, society etc. These problems are created because of our interaction with others.
2. Adhiboudhikam: Sufferings which are beyond our control like troubles we face due to pest damage, pathogens etc.
3. Adhideivikam: Sufferings caused by natural calamities like storms and Earthquakes.
She requested the Lord to show us the way to escape the three types of tapa trayam. She knew that the three troubles could be escaped only when we reach Sri Vaikuntham. Therefore she asked the Lord to tell her about the way by which every single jeevatma can escape Samsara.
Lord Varaha's Instructions to Escape From Samsara:
The Lord mentioned that by singing His praise we can escape Samsara. For every letter in the song, the Lord grants us one thousand years in heaven. Even when the jeevatma is in heaven, the jeevatma will continue to sing the praise of the Lord and is not distracted by heavenly pleasures. Such a jeevatma is saluted by Devendran every single day. After the jeevatma’s time in heaven, it is automatically elevated to Sri Vaikuntham.
The second method is by offering beautiful flower garlands to the Lord. Only fragrant flowers are to be offered to our Lord. Fragrance represents pleasant smell and is therefore a symbol of Goddess Bhumi Devi as well.
Goddess Bhumi Devi gives us everything we need to worship the Lord. She gives us fruits, flowers, incense, sandal and so on. She wanted to demonstrate the proper way to worship Lord Vishnu. She made a note of the Lord’s instruction and waited for 27 chatur yugams to pass by before incarnating as Andal. She chose the time of her incarnation carefully as she wanted to incarnate as the daughter of Periazhwar.

Garuda Temple – Koladevi, Mulbagal,Kolar

(Only temple in the world  with Garuda has the Main deity)

Garuda Temple in Koladevi is one of the ancient historic, epic Ramayana-related temples. This is one of very few temples dedicated to Lord Garuda, Vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Koladevi is located from 100 km from Bangalore, 18 km from Mulbagal national highway, 19 km from Srinivaspur and 4 km from Mudianur. It was built under the supervision of Sri Ramanujacharya.

Legend

Legend of this temple is connected with all yugas – Jatayu of Ramayana era, Arjuna of Lord Krishna's Era and then the Brighu Maharishi’s time!

During Thretayuga, On seeing the Ravana taking the Seetha Matha on his pushpaka vimana, King of birds Jatayu tried to save Seetha. He first adviced Ravana of his misdeed, he did not pay heed, then he fought with Ravana. While fiercely fighting to rescue Seetha, Jatayu’s Wings were chopped by Ravana with his sword and Old Jatayu was no match for Ravana and Jatayu was severely wounded. He fell down, writhing in pain, the Bird chanted ‘Rama, Rama’. Lord Sri Rama and Lakshmana who came in search of Seetha Matha noticed the Bird on hearing the chant of Rama nama and learnt the facts. Jatayu gave the news that Ravana has abducted the Seetha Matha. Jatayu, before leaving his physical body, requested Rama to do his Anthima Kriya at the same place. Then Rama did the Kriyas and proceeded in search of Seetha Matha. The people at Koladevi village proudly believe that all this happened at their place.

Another Legend says that this temple is related to the Kandava Dhana Kandam. At the near end of Dwaparayuga, Agni Deva developed severe stomach problems and indigestion after accepting offerings from the various yagnas performed during those days. He then went to the Arjuna and Lord Sri Krishna for a solution. Arjuna suggested Agni Deva to take advantage of the medicinal herbs present in the Kandava forest by eating it whole. Agni Deva did so and during the burning of the forest, both Arjuna and Krishna guarded the forest so that no one could stop the forest fire or step out of the forest. But unfortunately the King of snakes Takhsaka who was trapped in the forest got injured in the fire, and many snakes died. Even though Taksha did not curse Arjuna, he felt there is a Sarpadosha. Arjuna met great Sages to get over dosha and they advised him to perform Garuda Pooja to get rid of Sarpadosha. Then, Arjuna worshipped the Garuda who appeared before Arjuna and told that he cannot get him rid of the Sarpadosha, but Lord Mahavishnu alone can do it. He told he is just a humble servant of Lord Sriman Narayana. By that time Narayana also descended to the earth and told Garuda to bless Arjuna. For that Garuthmanta told he will bless Arjuna provided Lord Maha Vishnu and Jaganmatha sit on his Bhjua and give him darshan as Lord Rama and Seetha. Some centuries ago, the deity of Garuda was installed by the great Sage Bhrugu Maharshi at this very same place where Srimannarayana blessed both Garuda and Arjuna. Since then pooja is performed regularly to the Deity.

Katu Shyamji Temple, Sikar, Rajasthan

This temple is dedicated to Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers. He was capable of ending the Mahabharata war in a minute due to a boon he had received from Lord Shiva. Barbarika wanted to fight along with the weaker side in the Mahabharata war but was unable as the side he would take would become powerful and so he would have to keep changing sides thereby ensuring that no one would survive except for himself. Hence, he sacrificed his life to avoid such a situation by chopping his own head. He wanted to witness the Mahabharata war and so expressed his desire to Lord Krishna who placed his cut head on a mountain. Later on, Barbarika's head was found buried at the spot where the Katu Shyamji Temple stands.
