Resse's kid was filmed yesterday, doing just fine. So before going to bed, I had no concerns. The night he was born, I was so sick. I didn’t spend as much time as I normally would making sure they latched. The twins looked very lively and above average weight, so I assumed they would latch just fine.

The next day, I noticed kid wasn't doing so well. I Stole colustrum from another mom and syringe fed multiple times throughout the day. I honestly thought we were out of the woods.

This morning, he was barely hanging on. We rushed gim to the vet. (Thank you Kathy Myers )

I just got the evening update call from the vet:

he’s septic. What does that mean? It means an infection has spread into his bloodstream — and it likely started because he didn’t get colostrum in time. Failure to passive transfer. Colostrum is the first milk, and it’s packed with the antibodies that give a newborn their entire immune defense. If they miss that window — and in goats, it’s only a few hours — they’re wide open to bacteria.

Because he didn’t have the strength to suck, milk had to be given another way. But somewhere in the struggle, he aspirated. That means milk got into his lungs instead of her stomach, setting her up for pneumonia on top of everything else.

Now he’s tube-fed every 4 hours, on two kinds of antibiotics, and being monitored around the clock. He’s staying at the vet for at least 48 hours.

This isn’t easy to post. I already know there will be people who assume this was neglect or that I didn’t care enough. The truth is, I did care. I do. But I’m also human. I was physically down and made a judgment call that didn’t go the right way. That hurts.

Please keep this baby in your prayers. He’s got a hard road ahead — but we’re not giving up on him.

If using Chrome:
1) open up Chrome browser and type in YouTube.com/steinmetzfamilyfarms
2) in the bottom right corner, click on the 3 ... (dots) and then scroll down to "New Incognito Tab".
3) click on the 3 ... (dots) again in the bottom right corner and scroll down to "Request Desktop Site". You will then see the Join button under the big Steinmetz Family Farms name at the top where you can then become a member.

If using Safari:
1) open up the Safari browser and type in YouTube.com/steinmetzfamilyfarms
2) in the top left you will click on the square with the two lines underneath to the left to where you input the website address and then in the bottom right you will click on the 3 ... (dots).
3) Scroll down to "Request Desktop Site" and then you will see the Join button under the big Steinmetz Family Farms name at the top where you can then become a member.
