The village of Gozdevitsa is located near the sources of the Arda River. Picturesquely nestled at the foot of Mount Kom, the village has around 30 houses. Just a few decades ago, its inhabitants numbered close to 100 people.
– Nowadays, there's no one to share a word with. It's a good thing I have my sheep; at least I can talk to them.
That’s what Yusein Hadzhiev told me. He is the last resident here. He describes himself as a doctor, mayor, and policeman. A widower for two decades, he is now approaching his 80s.
– I stayed here alone, but it's dangerous too. A few years ago, thieves robbed me and took the last 40 leva from my pension. Bad people are born these days, you know – he shares, half-jokingly, half-bitterly.
– Your village is beautiful – I awkwardly try to lighten the conversation.
– Yeah, it’s beautiful, but who’s there to enjoy it? You come with your backpacks and cameras. You take pictures, you look around – it’s nice. But when there are no people, it’s not nice at all. Who enjoys empty houses?
I set off for Mount Kom. To the place where this man has likely climbed hundreds of times. He used to look at the smoking chimneys, the fields, and the grazing flocks. We won’t see them. They’ve been gone for a long time.
– Young man, look carefully so you don’t end up taking the wrong turn at some crossroads and find yourself in Greece!
Yusein gathers his few sheep and heads off. He will tell them about our meeting, sharing his loneliness once again. They are his companions. The only ones...
That was my first and last meeting with him. He told me he was the last resident here. Whether that’s still the case today, I don’t know. I wish it weren’t...
