Hey Everyone; Please check out my 2024 Appalachian Trail Training Hike from today (12 January 2024). It started as an easy 8 mile hike out to the Whiskey Hollow Shelter in Northern Va on the Front Royal loop. The weather was forecast to be cloudy with a 50% chance of rain expected around 6pm. It's been getting dark around 4:45-5:00pm.
My plan was to be off trail by 4:00pm.
I had a scary run in with the largest Black Bear 🐻 that I've ever seen on trail. I didn't hear, smell or see it until it was about 40 feet from me. We both looked directly at each other and I think it was just as surprise as I was. I took a few steps back and started waving my Trekking Poles and Yelling "Hey Bear 🐻 Go Away Bear 🐻 " it took a few steps in my direction and then turned around and went down the hill.
I wasn't quick enough to get any good footage on video. I was trying to do all the right things to scare it away. Shortly after this the sky started to change and the wind pick up and I made a decision to turn around and try to make it back to my vehicle before the storm hit and darkness set in. I made it back in the rain and nearly total darkness. I'm glad I turned around when I did. I hope you enjoy the video. Thank you for watching. Shades
