I turned 17 yesterday.

At 17, I have written 2 research papers, created 2 large-scale projects, and undertaken 2 internships. (Too many 2s, don't you think? 😅)

Here's how I did it in 2 years (and how you can do it in 5 months):

1) CHOOSING A PASSION

The first step to developing your skills is to choose a passion. Find something you enjoy and are curious about, even if you're not already good at it. For me, I was already interested in programming and knew that AI was the right field for me almost as soon as I was exposed to it. However, if you're not sure, don't worry. Explore different areas until you find something that truly interests you - something that you cans ee yourself working on, and enjoy.

2) DEVELOPING THE PASSION

The next step is to develop your passion by choosing relevant courses and learning both the theory and practical aspects of the technology. You can start by taking online courses, attending workshops or seminars, and reading books on the topic. Personally, I found a LOT of courses on Coursera, EdX, even YouTube, and began to take part in those. At the same time, I ensured to implement what I had learnt in small-scale AI models, as a form of practice (as well as an introduction to the next point).

3) BUILD A PORTFOLIO

Building a portfolio is an essential step in developing your skills and demonstrating your expertise to potential employers or clients. It involves creating a collection of projects and assignments that showcase your skills and knowledge in your chosen field. I was personally interested in both the research and deployment of AI models. Thus, I wrote research papers on relevant topics, as well as created working AI products(One of my products is software that can use your facial movements to control your computer). In my experience, my portfolio has been incredibly important in securing trust with a few freelance clients even without a degree, so make sure you don’t ignore it.

4) FIND OPPORTUNITIES

Finding opportunities is the final step of your skill-building, and it is one that continues onwards pretty much forever. The first word that comes to mind when discussing this: Networking. Reach out to people in your industry or field. Yes, they might not respond, but some will, and even lesser might have some cool opportunities for you. Interested in research? Cold email some professors related to your field. What’s the loss, right?
Another option here for you is to constantly be on the lookout for opportunities, and create some on your own. Before even starting to create a network, I worked as a freelancer on Upwork and Fiverr for 3-4 months. Opportunities will always be there, all you need to do is find them.

So now that you know how, why not let me know what skill you are looking to build, and let’s embark on this journey together…
