๐Ÿ’ฅ #UPDATE - DEACTIVATED AMBER ALERT
A man was charged Sunday as death investigations continue for two people in separate Broward County homes, as an AMBER Alert was discontinued for a taken four-year-old girl.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said it had arrested 43-year-old Nathan Gingles, charging him with violating an injunction regarding no contact with his 4-year-old daughter Seraphina Gingles and her mother 34-year-old Mary Catherine Gingles.

After Seraphina and Nathan Gingles were found alive, tragically Mary Catherine Gingles was found shot dead in a Tamarac home that's only a block away from another man who was also found shot dead.

Just after 6 a.m., BSO was called out to a reported shooting near 5700 Plum Bay Pkwy., prompting deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue to respond.

"They're advising about four rounds heard," said a dispatcher.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man who died from a gunshot wound inside the home, BSO said.

As part of their investigation, BSO then learned that Seraphina Gingles was taken from the home and an AMBER Alert was activated.
"Carrying a four-year-old white female," said a dispatcher. "Light green shirt, white shorts no shoes."

According to the AMBER Alert, Seraphina Gingles was believed to have been taken by Nathan Gingles in a 2016 silver BMW X3 with the Texas license plate 5DV2950 that was last seen heading east on West Commercial Boulevard after 6 a.m.
BSO said at the time, it was believed that Seraphina's mother Mary Catherine Gingles was accompanying them.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Nathan and Seraphina Gingles were found when deputies with BSO's Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) team found the BMW near a Walmart Supercenter on West McNab Road in North Lauderdale.

BSO's Homicide and Crime Scene Units continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the two deaths and the incident as a whole. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS (8477).

ORIGINAL POST:

Foothill High School senior Jennaleah Hin was reported missing on Monday, Dec. 30, 2024, following a home dispute. The 17-year-old was last seen leaving her home in the Paradise Hills area, near Horizon Ridge and Kind Ave. in Henderson, NV around 7pm Monday 12/30. She's a senior at Foothill High School, and left home without a phone. Responders are deploying helicopters, drones, K-9s, horses, and various vehicles to search for the missing teen.

Henderson Police Department, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, North Las Vegas Police Department, Drug Enforcement Agency and Red Rock Search & Rescue are among the agencies assisting in search efforts alongside school district officers.

โ€œShe was distraught when she left, and now it's been four days,โ€ said Mark Speer, a Red Rock Search & Rescue commander. โ€œSo every day it gets more critical.โ€
According to the family, the teen, who also goes by Jenna, had a minor dispute with the family before her disappearance.

โ€œItโ€™s just a normal family dispute, you know, that teenagers have with their parents,โ€ said Speer. "Nothing out of the ordinary."

At the moment, investigators do not suspect any foul play and have been in contact with the teenโ€™s friends, family, and boyfriend โ€” who have all been cooperative with the investigation.

"I just want to say I love you. We just want you back. Our home is broken without you and we need you, so please come back," said Hin's stepfather Corey Swanson.
"Jenna wherever you are, whoever you're with. I just want you to come home. I want you safe. We love you so much. Please come home please come home to me," said Hin's mother Jennifer Swanson.

According to Speer, the K-9 unit found Hinโ€™s scent in a desert area near her home on the edge of Paradise Hills. The trail, he continued, led south away from the city. Today, rescuers are combing through a ten-mile stretch to look for clues.

After the initial press conference for the missing teen Friday morning, Speer said they received promising reports of Jenna being sighted in the city but still plan to continue searching the wilderness tomorrow morning.

This full-scale effort also includes community volunteers and Foothill High School students. Foothill High School freshmen Evan Molony, Colton Ross, and Kaeyioun Forrest brought their bikes to assist in ground-level surveys of the desert area.
Despite the conflict prior to her disappearance, family and friends say this behavior is out of character for the high school senior.

โ€œShe's planning on going to nursing school,โ€ said Oliva, a family friend, noting the teen as a straight-A student. โ€œShe's on course to graduate top of her class. She's going places in life. So this is out of character.โ€
Hin was last seen leaving her home wearing all black, without a backpack, her phone or supplies. She is described as 5'6" and weighing 163 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black Under Armor sweatshirt and black Under Armor sweatpants.

๐Ÿ’ โœณUPDATE: PETITO/SCHMIDT VS MOAB CITY PDโœณ๐Ÿ’
A judge has dismissed a lawsuit by the family of Gabby Petito filed against the Moab Police Department and the City of Moab, citing a nearly 60-year-old Utah state statute.
Nichole Schmidt, the mother of Gabby Petito, filed the lawsuit in a Utah district court in Nov. 2022, saying that police failed to protect her daughter who was murdered by her fiancรฉ weeks after an encounter with law enforcement.

Petito's parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt's attorney, Burton, argued on Wednesday that Gabby Petito called her parents during the interaction with police and they wanted her to come home, but Gabby assured them the police would take care of things.

The attorney said her parents relied on the police to handle the situation, but they say a "grossly negligent" investigation increased the chances of their daughter being harmed. He said officers placed Gabby Petitio in a police car and sympathized with Laundrie, laughing with him, which could have emboldened him. He said one of the responding officers explained the risk of domestic violence situations, showing he understood but did not follow the proper response.

In the weeks prior to Petitoโ€™s murder, body camera footage from a traffic stop in Moab raised eyebrows. Officers in the small Utah town had received a report of a domestic violence incident and pulled over Gabby and Brian. She was crying and had visible scratch marks on her body.

The events were caught on the officersโ€™ body cameras as they questioned the couple after a witness reported them fighting earlier in the day. Petito admitted to striking Laundrie but officers declined to make an arrest. The two were separated for the evening and then were allowed to continue their cross country road trip the next day.

Mitchell Stephens, the attorney representing the Moab Police Department, argued that the case must be dismissed due to governmental immunity, but he also said arguments about Moab's involvement in her death are completely speculative.
Lawyers for the City of Moab had argued that the homicide occurred 38 days after the altercation that Moab Police responded to. They also promoted the 1965 Governmental Immunity Act of Utah that protected the City from being sued.
He said the couple left Moab together and traveled for about a month before her death. He cited multiple instances where courts have not found police at fault when domestic violence escalated to murder.
"Moab is not liable for criminal conduct that occurred a month later in a different state. Brian Laundrie is the cause of Gabby Petito's death," Stephens said.

The Petito familyโ€™s argument was that the failure of law enforcement to protect Gabby directly led to her murder.

Judge Torgerson said that it was likely not the sole cause of the murder, though he agreed with the Petitosโ€™ saying the investigation was faulty.
Utah 7th District Court Judge Don Torgerson sided with the City of Moab in its request to dismiss the suit, citing current state laws.
The judge said he had no choice but to dismiss, based on the stateโ€™s immunity laws that protect certain employees from lawsuits.
Torgerson dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning if appellate courts affirm his decision Petito's parents can't file the lawsuit again.

Attorneys for the Petito family intend to continue research into other possibilities, indicating that despite a dismissal they will continue to fight Moab Police.
A statement released on behalf of Nicole Schmidt from the law firm at Parker + McConkie stated the following: โ€œWhile the ruling today may feel like a setback, it was not unexpected. We never anticipated that this would be an easy process and look forward to the Utah Supreme Court upholding the Utah Constitutionโ€™s original intent to preserve the right to recover for wrongful death claims under these circumstances. We remain committed to pursuing justice for Gabby and thank the many people who have continued to support us in that fight.โ€
