Islam is a monotheistic religion founded by the prophet Muhammad in the 7th century in Arabia ¹ ² ³:
- The name "Islam" means "submission" or "surrender" as followers of the religion, known as Muslims, surrender to the will of the God, Allah.
- There are currently around 1.8 billion Muslims in the world, with the majority residing in the Middle East and North Africa.
- The sacred scripture of Islam is the Qurʾān, which contains revelations of Allah to Muhammad.
- Muslims also draw on the sayings and deeds of Muhammad, known as the Sunnah, for their religious guidance.
- The Five Pillars of Islam are the five obligations for all Muslims, which include the profession of faith, prayer, charity, pilgrimage and fasting.
- Islam is one of the three Abrahamic religions, along with Judaism and Christianity.
