#OTD 🌍 Mark " MATA " Essex at 23 years old became a martyr of Pan Afrikan/Black Liberation on January 7, 1973, 52 years ago after being harrassed, bullied, and racially terrorized in U.S. navy. On this date He took the New Orleans PD to War.
Before his guerrilla military operation, the television station WWL received a handwritten note from Essex. It read:
‘Africa greets you. On Dec. 31, 1972, aprx. 11 p.m., the downtown New Orleans Police Department will be attacked. Reason — many, but the death of two innocent brothers will be avenged. And many others.

During his military action at the Howard Johnson Hotel 🏨 Mata aka Mark Essex would leave behind a Red ❤️ Black 🖤 Green 💚 Pan Afrikan Flag in honor of those black people killed by racist police terrorism, Hours later he would be killed in combat shot some say 142-200 times.
Upon joining the Navy Mark Essex experienced his first bout with racism getting into fights with white sailors whom he felt directly harrassed and offended him. Because of these constant battles he received disciplinary action. Shortly afterwards he was befriended by a Rodney Franks, a fellow disenfranchised sailor from New Orleans and a wannabe militant. Franks introduced Essex to Black Panther literature, instantly a change occurred in his personality.
Fed up with the Navy after less than two years, Mark Essex went AWOL at the end of 1970. Hate become his motivation and that hate was for all white people. He was discharged from the Navy in Febuary 1971. After a 3 month stint in New York, immersing himself in the literature of the Black Panther Party, further supplying the hate that was brewing deep inside of him. The party’s publications taught tactics for urban guerrilla warfare, referred to police officers as “pigs”, suggested the best weapon for the urban guerrilla – one of their weapons of choice was the .44 Magnum carbine rifle – and stressed head shots for quick kills.
His last known words to be uttered after attempt by a N.O. Police officer to persuade Essex to surrender for several minutes, ending his efforts by saying: “What do you say, brother? Why not save yourself? Give up before it’s too late. If you’re wounded, we can get you medical help.” In response, Essex screamed, “Power to the people!”
N.O. Police suffered several casualties including on New Year’s Eve at a police precinct when Essex military action began.

Comrad Sanyika’s article is re-printed from the Jan. 1997 issue of New Afrikan Community Bulletin published by The Freedom Network, a captive New Afrikan cadre org. functioning in Michigan during 1990s. It is dated 1/1/378 ABA, which corresponds to January 1, 1997.
While historical evidence demonstrates that people from Afrika traveled to, some possibly settling in the western hemisphere prior to european discovery and conquest, New Afrikans generally mark the beginning of our sojourn in 1619.
It is from that point that the fusion of various Afrikan peoples melded into the people We are today, New Afrikans. A.B.A. means “after the beginning again,” introduced by Afrocentric scholar Dr. Molefi Asante and adopted by some within the NAIM as a cultural marker in the process of historicizing our national development.
We will discuss this in more detail in later issues of Re-Build!
