Deep breathing induces a calming effect on the body. Scientists have identified a link between the respiratory center in the brain and areas linked to arousal, relaxation, and anxiety. When we experience pain, our breathing pattern becomes shallow and rapid, increasing anxiety and stress. Taking a few minutes several times per day is a simple way that we can start to get some power back over our pain. Simply, put one hand over your belly and intentionally take several deep breaths into your hand. This encourages you to breath with your diaphragm. Here is the link for more information:
