🔴 A new study published in the UK’s Lancet medical journal estimates that #Gaza's death toll during the first nine months of the war was about 40% higher than figures reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The researchers sought to assess the death toll from Israel’s air and ground campaign in Gaza between October 2023 and the end of June 2024, estimating 64,260 deaths due to traumatic injury during this period.

The majority of the 64,260 deaths (59%) were women, children and elderly people.

The peer-reviewed statistical analysis published in The Lancet journal on Thursday was conducted by academics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Yale University and other institutions.

Former Australian hostage Timothy Weeks, who converted to #Islam, has passed away from cancer in Kabul on Wednesday.

Timothy Weeks, a 54-year-old English language teacher from Australia, spent three and a half years in Taliban captivity in #Afghanistan.

The Australian academic had been a lecturer at the American University in Kabul in 2016 when taken hostage by the Taliban. He was held hostage for three years before being released in a prisoner swap in 2019.

After his release, the Australian teacher converted to Islam, changed his name to Jibra’il Omar, and has previously praised the work of the Taliban.

In August 2022, he returned to Afghanistan to complete his journey:

“I first came to Afghanistan six years ago as you know, in 2016, and I came here with a dream to learn about Afghanistan. Now I'm coming again to complete my journey. I'm also coming to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan who I have stood behind.”

The Lebanese government has decided to extradite Egyptian poet and activist Abdul Rahman al-Qaradawi to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite warnings he would be at real risk of enforced disappearance, torture and other ill-treatment, and unfair trial leading to prolonged imprisonment.

Abdul Rahman, also a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, was detained on 28th December at the Lebanese border while returning from #Syria, where he had travelled to celebrate the downfall of the Assad regime.

Abdul Rahman filmed himself in Damascus criticising the authorities of the UAE, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Abdul Rahman is the son of the late Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi.

🔴 Assad regime executed 94 Hamas members without trial, intelligence documents show

Dozens of leaders and members of the Hamas movement have been executed by the ousted Assad regime.

Al-Quds Al-Arabi was told by Hamas sources that 94 members were executed in Syrian prisons without trial.

Intelligence documents found in the Syrian security services' headquarters after the fall of Assad's regime show that the order was to arrest anyone connected to Hamas.

Despite reconciliation two years ago, the Assad regime continued to label Hamas as a “traitorous movement”.

The family of Egyptian opposition activist Abdul Rahman al-Qaradawi has called on Lebanese authorities to immediately release him, as fears grow that he will be deported to #Egypt, where he is wanted by the government.

Abdul Rahman, also a citizen of the Republic of #Turkey, was detained on 28th December at the Lebanese border while returning from Syria, where he had travelled to celebrate the downfall of the Assad regime.

Abdul Rahman filmed himself in Damascus calling Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the #UAE "Zionist Arab regimes".

Al-Qaradawi had been sentenced by an Egyptian court in absentia to five years in prison on charges of “opposing the state and inciting terrorism”, the official said.

The family said the ruling was a response to an article published by al-Qaradawi in 2012, and warned that Lebanon would be endangering al-Qaradawi’s life if it extradited him to #Egypt.

Abdul Rahman is the son of the late Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi.

"I am oppressed oh mother!"

Written by a Syrian detainee on the walls of a cell of the notorious Branch 215 Military Prison in Damascus.

Branch 215 was one of the main Assad regime prisons where torture and mass executions were carried out on a daily basis. It is known by many names, including the "Branch of Death." The number of victims from this branch, which were documented by Caesar (a defected regime soldier) with photographs, runs up to 3,532, who died under torture or from disease and
starvation.
