Children of Watamu (UK reg charity 1098731) built and runs the Happy House Children's Home in Watamu, Kenya. Founder, Sue Hayward and her husband, Dave, are Mama and Papa to a growing family of orphaned, abandoned, neglected or abused children.
In 2017, there are 70 children living in the family. A nursery, primary and secondary school educates all the Happy house kids plus kids from the local community whose parents pay a modest fee to sustain the school.
Another 87 young people, from abject poverty, receive free education, books, uniform etc through the charity's Dr Danwata Scholarship Scheme. This will be extended to more young people as funding allows.
Happy House also supports the education and medical care of 50 children, previously in its full time care, who have been repatriated to relatives who, having rebuilt their lives, are able to give a home to their children once again. Only those working at the Happy House, who are Kenyan, are paid.
