First Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 1950, three years after getting independence. The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. It came into effect on January 26, 1950. India attained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, and it wasn't until January 26, 1950, that the Constitution came into effect. India became a sovereign and a republic state.
