Founded in 1995, Turnstyle is an Australian indie-rock band influenced by Pavement, Stereolab, and Merge Records, incorporating Casio keyboards and vintage synthesizers into their guitar-driven sound. Drawing inspiration from post-punk, The Velvet Underground, and Nancy Sinatra, they gained local recognition by 1997 and toured Australia in 1998. Their debut album Turnstyle Country (1998/99) was self-funded before signing with Spunk! Records, with the single "Spray Water On The Stereo" gaining airplay.
After releasing Turnstyle Corporation in 2001, they went on an 8-year hiatus. The original lineup reunited in 2010, releasing Time Equals Function (2015) and Happy Factories (2018). In 2020, their Casio keyboard rig was featured at the Western Australian Museum. Their fifth studio album, Citizens’ Handbook, was released in 2023, followed by a revisited version of Turnstyle Corporation in 2024. They’ve shared stages with Teenage Fanclub, Superchunk, GBV, Shonen Knife, Custard, and more.
