First Hunt has gotten a lot of love since the release, so I thought I'd answer a few frequently asked questions that have come up on the short. If you have a question that isn't answered here, feel free to ask!
What kind of dinosaurs are the characters?
The mom and the baby are based on Utahraptors
The two antagonists are based on Dracorex. Though I have since learned that Dracorex is thought to be a juvenile version of the Pachycephalosaurus. They are adults, but I've continued to refer to them as Dracorex because it sounds cool.
My priority wasn't to be incredibly accurate to existing dinosaurs. I had to stick with this short all day everyday for 8 months. I wanted to make something I was going to enjoy drawing over and over and over, and so I took creative liberties with the designs for fun.
Why are the Dracorex hunting the baby raptor?
They were inspired as the antagonists after I read about Pachycephalosauridae being omnivorous. Shortly after I also came to learn many prey animals (such as deer) will occasionally snack on meat. I thought it would be fun to have an antagonist that wasn't a typical expected predator animal.
With the film taking place in a harsh desert, food is scarce, and the Dracorex have to turn to other animals for food. There is an additional 2 minutes of film that was cut due to time constraints, however, that also show-case the Dracorex being bullies, and going after the baby for fun.

Compositing - After Effects
Editing - Premiere Pro
How long did it take?
Its hard to say the exact time frame. The majority of the project was completed in 8 months for school in 2023, however a couple shots were incomplete. I got caught up with work after graduating and wasn't able to return to the short until a year later. If not including the time where I took a break from the short, Id say it took about 8-9 months, full-time.
There are an additional 2 minutes from the film that were fully storyboarded, however half way through the school year I had to cut them in order to try and complete the film in time. I don't intend to complete these boards, but I may share them at some point.
Will First Hunt be continued or a series?
First Hunt was created with the intention of being a standalone short film for my final year in animation school. When making it, and as of right now, I have no intention of continuing it as a series. However if it gets enough positive attention, I may consider a continuation, or a similar project in the future.
Will I make more dinosaur shorts?
I have several projects that I am either chipping away at now, or keeping in mind for the future. More dinosaur related projects are a possibility.
There is a very early version of the film that was a much different story. This version of the story was scrapped as it was going to be too long of a film to complete in time, and it didn't show-case my animation ability as much as I wanted the short to. I do still really like this version of the story however, and may return to it one day in the future with new characters.

How did I do the sound design?
I didn't! The sound design was done by Richard T Williams, I am unsure what his process was. Richard has done work on other dinosaur related media, such as The Isle and Primal Carnage (video games), which is how I found him.
