I started Community MAP in 2008 to bring artists and people uptown in Harlem and Washington Heights/Inwood together through an interactive art map. I was working with The Harlem Arts Alliance until the wonderful Averlyn Archer, who was assisting me passed away. She was kind and intelligent and believed in the project. I received a small grant from The Citizens' Committee for New York City, but those funds were quickly spent on a domain name, cards, etc. I wrote many letters and either met or spoke with many people, but there wasn't any further assistance. I applied for grants and spent an incredible amount of time, which I hoped would lead to economic development and a stronger uptown community with art as an engine but there was no support to be found. I eventually had to pause this project due to health problems. My experience with this project made me wonder how many other entrepreneurs/artists have made a serious effort to contribute to their communities only to be ignored. #ARTNYC
