I don't think polarized training is the be-all and end-all in cycling training. HOWEVER...
...it is a very effective and easy-to-execute training model, with applications for novice and experienced athletes alike.
When Stöggl & Sperlich tested 9 weeks of polarized training against other training modalities back in 2014, the polarized model came out on top.
The well-trained endurance athletes who participated (cyclists, triathletes etc.) tested a whopping 12% increase in VO2 max and 8% greater power at 4 mmol/L after 9 weeks.
I've made a simple training plan framework based on the model applied in the Stöggl & Sperlich paper, along with some comments on how to adjust it to your needs.
