Update: after a few months of research, writing, and then re-writing I have begun editing the next video, and it is shaping up to be potentially the longest one yet.

In 2022, 209 million kg of both commercial and professional fireworks were set off in the US. Now if you want to be conservative and say that on average 1/4 of a firework's weight is dedicated to pyrotechnics (propulsion/blast) and that they are all using black powder (which they aren't, but whatever), that's nearly 157 million megajoules of total energy, or to simplify, about 37.5 kilotons of TNT.

Happy 4th.

Hi everyone, I guess it's been a minute.

Wanted to put a few things out there that I think are worth it right now:

First of all, I am starting up a patreon. This isn't really how I wanted to announce this; I had this whole goofy video I wanted to make, but I'm unreasonably picky about what order I upload my next couple videos in at the moment. Thus a community post will have to suffice, at least for now. I promise I'll announce it in a more fun way in the future.

I've made a post on the patreon explaining why it is going to be important for the channel moving forward; figured I'd leave the long-winded explanation over there rather than here. So if you have the time, stop by and read that, and thank you if you do.

Secondly, the video I've been working on. Obviously not going to outright say what it is, but one of the previous community posts should give you some idea.

I'm going to be totally honest, I burned out for about a month and a half, and on top of that I was pretty busy during April planning and taking a couple trips to Oklahoma. That being said not a whole lot of progress has been made on it in the last few months outside of concept and some research. However, I'm back at it now, trucking along. I can't say that I have any predictions as to what the timeframe for it is. It'll be done when it's done, just know that I'm working on it (and I'll tell you if I stop).

Third: thank you. Like really, thank you all. I've never been obsessive over my subscriber count, but I woke up the other day, looked at that 20k, and it seriously hit me that we're here. An audience like that is never a gift I remotely expected to receive. Of course, that's just a number, and what actually matters is all of you guys behind that number, as well as the amazing responses I've gotten. The compliments, the criticisms, the questions, they're all incredible. I've read just about all of them, and I feel like I finally needed to say how much I appreciate it.

So with all that, give the ol' patreon a visit I suppose, and it's back to exploding mountains for me.

Just about a year ago now, I had the incredible chance to stop by the exact spot where Dr. Erik Rasmussen captured his famous footage of the Cordell, OK tornado on May 22, 1981 while chasing with the NSSL sound chase team. Evidently, Dr. Howard Bluestein's TOTO deployment team also set up around here after presumably realizing they wouldn't be able to get ahead of the tornado as it crossed Highway 183. Seeing as this is a contender for my favorite tornado of all time, this managed to be the most exciting part of the chase day, even after my chase partners and I were hammered by a 90 Kt derecho later that evening (thank you Ricky and Jared for putting up with my obsessions).

Footage of the Cordell and Alfalfa tornadoes from the May '81 outbreak (second half is Cordell):

Merry Christmas, everyone

Since the video essay I'm currently working on has been taking me quite a bit longer than I would have liked, I thought I'd drum up a little teaser for y'all in the meantime.

I hope this gives a definitive answer to those of you who were wondering if more long-form videos were to come. I promise, there are.

Although I didn't touch on it in the tornado scale video (or any landspouts for that matter), I've recently done some investigation into the EF2 that meandered its way through Weld County, Colorado back in 2021. Reportedly, NWS clocked cloud bases at 10,000 feet (~3000 meters), and the soundings I've managed to scrounge up seem to agree with that. If these figures are indeed correct, this would make it one of the tallest tornadoes ever observed (if not the absolute tallest), and this is how it would stack up:

(Thank you to Jason Perry for bringing this to my attention)
