Are you a fan of The Cartesian Cafe and interested in becoming its video editor?

After working with several Fiverr editors throughout the podcast’s journey, I’m curious if any listeners might want to take on this role. This would be especially rewarding if you have a mathematical or technical background, as it would allow you to genuinely connect with (and enjoy!) the content you’re editing. Your expertise would give you a significant edge over general editors who often work without any understanding of the material. As a video editor for The Cartesian Cafe, you’ll get exclusive access to behind-the-scenes footage and even have input in shaping the final content.

I’ll make sure your time is compensated, though I want to be upfront: this is a passion project that doesn’t generate profit. Your pay will be in the range of the budget Fiverr editors I’ve worked with, so I’m hoping you’re mainly driven by personal enjoyment in helping out the podcast.

If this sounds like a fit for you, please shoot me an email at tim@timothynguyen.org

Who would you like to see on The Cartesian Cafe in 2025?

I was interviewed on a podcast last year which somehow didn't get published until I nudged the interviewer this weekend when it crossed my mind. The conversation ended up being a wide-ranging one on a blend of math, education, and entrepreneurship that viewers here might be interested. We cover the education system vs self-education, entrepreneurship vs artistry, being an educator vs an explainer, math vs marketing vs AI research, and the value of a math PhD among other topics:

Dear viewers, this is just to announce that there will be some delay in getting out the next episode for The Cartesian Cafe. The next two guests I had lined up had some unforeseen circumstances which will delay their interview. Moreover, sadly my health has been unusually poor for over a month - I'm still fighting off a viral infection that has left me with less energy and less than ideal voice for speaking. Hoping to get better soon and get back on track. Cheers.

I posted an announcement to viewers of The Cartesian Cafe on the podcast version to provide some brief news on what's happening in 2024 and also on how to support the cafe: cartesiancafe.podbean.com/e/announcements-for-2024…

On this last point, the Cartesian Cafe incurs costs to host video for podcast players without any compensating ad or sponsorship revenue. Only YouTube generates ad revenue, and I only recently learned (unfortunately from some annoyed viewers in the comments) that YouTube's default setting is extremely aggressive. I've now scaled back the frequency of advertisements.

In any case, if you would like to support the cafe and its growth, please consider joining my Patreon at www.patreon.com/timothynguyen (where you will incur benefits!) or leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts.

Cheers,
Tim

Dear viewers, to help me calibrate future Cartesian Cafe episode difficulty levels, I'd like to know your technical education:

Dear viewers: do you any suggestions for the current intro format of The Cartesian Cafe? Right now it's sneak preview -> biographical interview -> technical overview -> technical interview.

This contrasts with a typical intro format I hear from other podcasts: some thematic sound bite + post-recording overview and reflections -> main interview.

The reason I've stuck to my format is
1) effort: there is already so much work into getting the technical content of the video correct that I haven't thought much about investing in additional post-production recording
2) shownotes: they already give a very detailed outline (I assume engaged listeners will already rely upon this to get an accurate overview)
3) solo vs live: I find myself much more engaging live rather than recording solo (from my experience making solo videos on my channel)

Would appreciate your feedback or comments.

I've generated a timestamped diarization of my recent Sean Carroll episode that is available on my Patreon page for all patrons. The first hour is available as a preview. If there's enough interest, I can generate transcripts for all past episodes too. They may prove useful for those wishing to study the episode more deeply or else quickly reviewing or finding content.
